Stereo volume keeps going down

Featured Replies

Hi,

The volume keeps going down on the stereo to zero. I don't mind the volume cutting out when I'm reversing but not on changing radio channels. I may be imagining it but it's worse when driving fast when the volume zeroises every time I change radio station. Can someone help?

Thanks

Matt

I've noticed something similar when using DAB, changing radio stations seems to cause a silence of several seconds before the new station is heard.

Maybe it's the DAB signal being buffered (to prevent short pauses whilst listening), that's what I've assumed/guessed?

Thanks but I don't use DAB for that reason. I'm still sticking to the tried and tested analogue plus the volume doesn't come back even when left for minutes.

which stereo do you have & are you changing stations with the steering Wheel buttons or with the touch screen?

Could it be a sticky scroll Wheel?

This is normal with DAB radio. There's no white noise when the signal is weak like analogue radio.

When the signal is lost there is just silence.

I'm not referring to when there is loss of signal, but when changing stations.

What isn't normal IMHO is the long silence (several seconds) when I change to a new station DAB - the DAB in my other car only has a silence of a fraction of a second when changing stations.

I don't know which stereo, the standard one? Changing stations with left steering wheel up/down button. The volume drops to zero sometimes. I then of course use the scroll wheel next to it to turn the volume back up again but it's the changing of the stations/usage of the up/down button that makes the volume drop to zero and not playing around with the volume scroll wheel. Also, it seems random when it does it!

Perhaps the button next to the scroll wheel is sometimes also pressing the scroll wheel, and activating the mute function?

This was what I was getting at, because the left & right arrows are next to the scroll Wheel which can be pressed to mute the sound.

It would also explain the randomness.

The steering Wheel buttons dont seem the most robust as a few forum users have had them replaced.

If you switch stations using the touchscreen or buttons on the stereo do you have the same behaviour?

For info there are 3 levels of stereo unit (bolero, Amundsen & Columbus) & 2 hardware levels based on model year (MIB1 and MIB2).

What do you replace them with, different buttons? They'd have to be the same shape though. Actually, I have discovered that the scroll button/volume button looked to be on different toggles but they are all one toggle. You guys are right and I need to change stations on the radio to eliminate possibilities.

Obviously pressing the Arrow buttons are not supposed to also click down the scroll-Wheel.

Either there is some contamination Inside (dirt or dust) putting pressure onto the scroll Wheel or the part is defective.

The dealer would just order a new part of the same button assembly & refit it.

If you car isnt in warrenty I'm sure someone on here with access to Erwin would be able to give the instructions to remove & replace the buttons so you could try inspecting/cleaning it first before paying for a replacement.

Alternatively perhaps a quick blast between the gaps with some compressed air might help improve the situation.
