Warning lights after service

Featured Replies

Took my 63 plate Superb in for minor service 3 days ago.  Today on starting it the dashboard lights lit up like the proverbial Christmas tree.  ABS, ESC, tyre pressure, power steering, ASF directional lights, parking sensors and stop-start all apparently malfunctioning.  The dealer won't commit to telling me if it is safe to drive (it probably is if I'm careful) but they can't fit it in for a week.  Any clues as to what has failed? Or is it just the diagnostics port doesn't like being plugged in at service? The cynic in me wonders if it was caused at service...

I had the exact same failures on my car a few months ago.

The cause was a rear ABS wheel speed sensor going faulty.  All the items that have "failed" need to know the wheel speed to function correctly.

The car was safe to drive correctly provided you accept that the driving aids mentioned are not working. In other words, drive carefully and safely until fixed.

Mine was fixed by the dealer in less than an hour at a cost of around €125 .

Possible, if they were working on brakes or something related (assuming it is the same fault as I had).

Who at the Dealers can not tell you if safe to drive, the person that uses the phone at the Service Desk or have you spoken to the Workshop Manager or Master Tech what their Technician might have done to your car and why they are not dealing with the issue in a timely manner?

Yeah just the person on the switchboard. They had a degree in stonewalling me!

Thanks @TheRobinK I'll make that suggestion when I call back.

Best talk with someone that knows about cars not about being a receptionist.

Offski is bang on regards the dealer behaviour.

I'd guessed it was a steering angle sensor, just maybe ABS related. I called my dealer (5.20pm on a Friday and I was 60 miles away). It was the number of faults that made me double check.

I got put onto a technician straight away (mind you - I told them to do this rather than "ask").  I told him the faults and said  I'd driven in the 90's and did just fine without the toys. He just said "Bingo -  your decision to drive of course - it is just a normal car for now but bring it in on Monday. Sounds like an ABS sensor".

For info for your "too busy to fit it in for a week" dealer:

1) Dropped car off at 10am on Monday.

2) Got call at 10.20am to say diagnostic showed ABS wheel speed sensor and quoted cost to fix.

3) Said yes by 10.21am.

4) Got call at 10.50am to say I could collect the car, or they could droop it back to me.
