Heating fan not working on Auto

Featured Replies

SE Technology TDI estate 67 plate.

Problem - I've suddenly noticed that the the heater fan does not appear to be working on Auto; OK if I switch to manual so it's not the fan motor.

Comment - I've had the car since June and I'm wondering if I am missing something or have pressed something that has turned the fan off in Auto.

Any help appreciated

Thanks

Rob

Hi,

when you say it is not working do you mean the fan is not working or just the lights on the knob, in auto on later models you have to enable the lights in auto mode with VCDS

Once the interior has warmed up the fan noise is not noticeable. And, as said above,  in automatic the fan speed is not shown at all, unlike manual. And there are various options for the auto fan speed, I have mine on the quietest feather symbol setting.

Ahh !!  Maybe that I just assumed like in  'Auto' on the Mk 2 that the fan level showed up, and it being summer until now I've just never noticed it before.  Funny because I thought it did show on the central heater dial.

I'll need to go back and re-try my pevious experiment of turning up the heating demand temperature making sure the engine is properly warm and see if the fan does become more active.  I'm not sure that the engine was properly warm when I tried that previously

Questions - 1   What is VCDS and how do you use it to enable the lights?

2  How does one adjust the fan characteristics that Gregoir mentions ?

Many thanks for your replies, guys.

VCDS is a software program and dongle that allows you to check and modify the cars software.

If you look at the thread on this site you can see if there is someone near you with the kit, most people will do the work for beer etc.

I am in Wiltshire if that helps.

I suspect it will be that it's on a low setting and inaudible. I coded it to show the speed on auto, and unless I've changed the temp to be specifically colder or hotter then it spends most of its time on fan speed 2 which is almost silent.
