My Dad is currently having a problem with one of his cars which is a 2005 Golf plus 1.9TDI 105 with climatic controls.

 

The problem is that the vents do not blow cold, its as if the air con is not working, but the strange thing is that the two drivers vents are colder than the passenger vents, as if one half of the vents is picking up a bit of heat.

 

I have hooked up VCDS and there are no codes and all flaps looks like they are working. The air con compressor is running and the evaporator temperature gets down to around 4C but the vent temp only ever blows ambient.

 

Its almost like there is no airflow through the evaporator, which I thought wasn't possible as its before the heater matrix in the ducting. The evap. temp in VCDS shows ambient and then when you switch the air con on it gets down to 4 degrees quickly as you would expect but the compressor is not doing any work and the pipes from the compressor are not too dissimilar in temperature.

 

Something strange is going on and i'm not sure where to look next, does anybody know what I could look at next? I did suspect that the evap temp sensor was faulty causing the compressor to back off to prevent the evaporator from freezing up, is this is easy to get to or buried in the dash?

Have you checked the Receiver-Dryer?

 

 

 

 

I don't see how I can check it without replacing it and seeing if it sorts the problem out. The system has never been opened up AFAIK.

 

I think i'm going to take the glove box out and see if the evaporator is actually getting cold like the sensor suggests, Might be 2 issues going on here

Well, that's supposed to be replaced every 3 years or so anyway and probably costs about £12, if it's anything like mine. Couple of bolts, a cup of tea, 20 minutes and a fag break, all while chatting to/up the hot lady next door. Whizz it up the local regas place, job done.
