How loud?! Louder than reverse? Can you get a video?

You could try changing the gearbox oil.

Yeah louder than reverse yeah i will get a video thanks for replying

You need to find a gearbox specialist. It'll be a gearbox off job and a partial strip/rebuild .

Whilst off it's also worth changing the flywheel, clutch and slave cylinder.

Er - did the seller say it was an easy fix?

PS  I've just had a gearbox rebuild done on Mrs Bigjohns's Fiat Panda. Had a bad diff whine (and getting worse)  at only 36k miles - oil change beforehand made absolutely no difference.  I used a great gearbox specialist in Hull who did a strip and fitted new bearings and seals etc - they also thoroughly cleaned out everything inc gear selectors. The result is a gearbox that feels smoother than it was new (and it's been in the family from new) and really quiet. All including a new clutch it was a bit over £600 all in which I was rather pleased with. The flywheel, clutch and slave cylinder will be more expensive on the VRS and I suspect the gearbox parts are cheaper on the Fiat.

If it's louder than reverse then I don't think a gearbox oil change is likely to fix it and as @bigjohn said it'll need taking apart to diagnose.

Might be easier to just get a used gearbox and have it inspected before fitting.

Did the person that said it could be an easy fix actually know what the easy fix might be,

and did they not say 'on the other hand it might not be so easy because i know nothing about them'?

Yeah kinda said easy fix was take end plate off gearbox and remove circlip change a spacer something to do with pressure between the selector forks and the gear but as i don't know much about gearboxes i thought it was best to get other people's advice before deciding what to do
