Rear brakes binding - handbrake?

Featured Replies

Picked up car on Saturday.  Was told brand new discs and pads all around, on inspection found this to be the case.  Drove beautifully on test drive.  Noticed on drive home there was a bit of a brakey aroma but that was put down to them bedding in.  Since then have noticed the brakes binding on the rear - only at national speed limit and dual carriageway speeds.  Never both at the same time, they alternate between nearside and offside.

Husband has taken a look and found that there is a very slight resistance to turning the discs.  (Sorry I’m not technically minded on cars so I’m recounting his explanation - Hess not computer savvy) when he frees off the bit the handbrake applies and leaves the handbrake off you get lovely free movement.  If you then apply and disengage the handbrake it doesn’t release fully and you then get the resistance back again.

No sign of any fluid leaks whatsoever, hoses are all fine with no sign of damage or perishing, callipers have been cleaned and aren’t seized.

It’s going to my trusted garage on Thursday for a major service anyway and I’m going to hand this over to them but does it look like something quite £££ to fix?  Just wondering how much I need to brace myself for the bill....

Could just be corrosion/dirt on handbrake actuator mechanism or binding cables.

If you aren't looking to get your hands dirty you can expect a pair of handbrake cables to be less than £15, fitted in less than an hour.

Hope so!

I wouldn’t stand a chance trying myself and whereas husband was happy to do stuff on cars pre ECUs etc he’s a bit worried with the newer stuff.

Sticky rear calipers ?

Can be freed up. Suspects need to be replaced. £50 a side non genuine caliper then fitting on top.

Not an uncommon vag problem, actuator arms get sticky. I ended up replacing both rear calipers on a sharan.

Not sure if of much help.

Had Off Side Front and Rear calipers and all four discs and pads replaced in November 2017 due to the OSF caliper seizing.

Still had issues with the brakes for weeks after, took it back to the local garage that fitted them who gave them the all clear.  Eventually took it to my local Skoda dealership and they stripped and cleaned the brakes.  They stated the brakes had not been lubricated/greased(?) adequately/correctly.

Whatever they did, it worked and touch wood, no issues since then including a mini road trip from Central Scotland down to  around Portsmout, and a windy drive up to the Highlands and back.

Best wishes.

Yeah my husband freed off the handbrake and stripped and cleaned them and it’s fixed.  Been for the service since and brakes working fine, no more smoke.

Glad you got things fixed instead of just replacing parts as is so common nowadays.
