Urgent Help

Hi Guys,

My Grandad has a MKII Octavia 1.6MPI and he has just decided to top up the oil. Against my reccomendation he has filled it up with a cheap "Generic" For all cars oil:thumbdwn: , He has not put in the Proper VW specification oil that it needs. The Manual states that using any other kind of oil may damage the engine as it is on flexible servicing, He hasnt started or driven the car yet. Is there likely to be any damage?

Best bet is to PM lummox.

It will certainly cause the car to think it needs a service quicker than normal.

As for any damage.... I doubt it

So It may throw the servicing timer a bit, but should be okay apart from that?

Probably no damage but that service will come round a lot quicker

How much did he put in it , and what exact type of oil was it?

It may not have been the VW stuff but if it's decent branded generic oil it won't be too far off.

I certainly wouldn't worry about flushing the oil out for half a litre of quality castrol or similar

Okay Here GOes,

Carlube 10w 40 Motor Oil

Specification SL/CF A2,B2

API SL/ACEA A2

Its a 1 litre bottle, he has put in about half of the bottle:eek:

Meets VW 501.1/505.00 , Actually I Think VW 505 is the one it might have wanted

I know nothing :o The only thing I would ask is why he topped up the oil. The oil light on my little Fabia glowed and I panicked and put oil in cos I couldn't see what the dipstick was showing (bad winter light) etc and being a dipstick myself LOL.

It was a faulty light, not the oil, so thanks to Brisky knew to go and have the excess drained off. Just thought I'd mention that in case.

Regards

Mo

You are allowed to use up to 1 litre of incorrect grade oil for top ups. However this is not recomeneded time and time again. Get a litre of 506.01 to put in the boot. Most dealers will have the nice velcro pouches in stock to keep it in.

But in the end some oil is better than none.

The Reason He topped it up is because it was getting a little bit low, and when we checked with the dealer they said It was heading for 20k. I Don't know alot about engines, but Isn't 20k from new with absolutley no maintenance at all a bit excessive. I'm sure I heard someone call the 1.6MPI "A Cambelted Boat Anchor Pulley" Or something to that effect, 20k is a long way for a tiny engine in a big car or have I fallen behind on modern engines?

My old vRs had its 1st service at 18K miles, its secont at 39K and another one more recently at 56K I think it is.

Most cars are now 20K ish or 2 years servicing. Modern engines and much better oil, combined with sensors that detect the deteriorating oil and light the service indicator should mean nothing untoward will happen.

If you have only topped up with around half litre of low spec oil I really would not worry the dilution rate would be minimal.

Make sure you have the correct grade for future top ups that is the main thing.
