Road noise

Featured Replies

I've recently bought a 09 Fabia 1.9 tdi and while I'm pleased so far, it does seem to be quite noisy in terms of road noise. Like a background hum or drone. Noticeable at around 45/50 up to about 65, especially on rougher roads. Not noticeable on some of the recently resurfaced ones around my way.

I'm thinking it might be the tyres (205/45 R16), which I might replace as considering the miles I do, they'll need doing sooner rather than later. I'm really hoping it's not a wheel bearing (are they still Gen 2 on the Mk2?), as the cars only done 70k and the bearings in my Mk1 lasted til at least 130-140k.

Or are they just noisy? Until I bought this, I'd been borrowing a Honda CRV, which was basically a land yacht, and was pretty quite, so I could well be going mad/paranoid/looking for problems.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers.

I've noticed the same on my 64 monte estate. not so noticable commuting, but long journeys on the motorway it's very noisy. I'm assuming its the low profile tyres, but not sure.

From what I have seen, people have been adding extra insulation to doors and the boot to reduce the noise. Quite tempted to do the same..

?

What are the tyres?

The brand and name and what pressure are they at, and have you tried them at higher or lower pressures.

A Honda CRV and a Mk2 Fabia are not comparing apples and pairs if you think about the purchase prices allowing for the difference in age,

but thinking about the vehicles class.

?

What tyres were on the Honda?

Thanks everyone, having since replaced all four tyres, I think the problem was uneven tyre wear. Much quieter (in comparison to now).
