Danger mileage for DPF

Featured Replies

Hi All.

I currently run a MKII TFSi VRS but I'm considering my options and an upgrade to a MKIII is possibly on the cards in the new year.

I like the petrol TFSi a lot, but a diesel MKIII is tempting as there are more options when purchasing second hand and the new house I'm moving to is that bit further from where I work so economy etc. is something to think about.

With that in mind, do I need to worry about the DPF on the MKIII diesel VRS? What sort of mileage on a single trip is a minimum to consider to make sure everything gets warm enough for the DPF to re gen?

I will be doing a round trip of 33 miles a day, the journey includes a good 3 mile chunk of very straight, very unused dual carriage way on which some speed can be built up. Is it likely that will be enough or is it likely I might expect DPF issues after a while?

Am I worrying about nothing even :)

Cheers

You will be fine with that distance, no problem. I used to commute 12 miles a day, with some motorway and never had any issues, sometimes I would interrupt a regen in the winter months as it takes longer for the car to warm up to start a regen in the first place.

That usage should be fine with the diesel and DPF.

Though I'd still be looking at the petrol personally. I do nearly 50 miles a day in mine and not regretting my choice. Diesel is now 7p per litre more expensive where I fill up, so that is slightly offsetting the worse mpg. I reckon the diesel would save about £1 a day on the commute.

Cheers both. Good to know the DPF wont be an issue.

I'd love to go for a petrol if I am able, the only issue is that used prices for petrol are higher and there is not so much choice. It will all boil down to budget unfortunately.

I hope you can find something you like. I am trading in my petrol VRS when my new one arrives, its the first time Ive found myself in positive equity on a PCP trade in. The money O was offered as a straight buy from arnold clark was a huge suprise. Im not sure if this is all thanks to VW cheating emissions and dieselgate or what but Im not complaining.

I do a 30 mile round trip to from work involving about 8 miles of motorway each way and have done nearly 90000 Miles in 3 DPF diesels since 2010 with no issues. Like others have said, you should be fine.

I do 150 miles a day twice a week and now 40 miles a day three times a week (I was doing 150 miles a day 5 days a week when I bought the car) and even at this point I was not keen on having a diesel. The vRS has been my first diesel car and I will still tell anyone that asks me that I love the car in every way except the engine. I just can’t get on with it myself but mine has averaged in the 10 months and 27.5k miles I’ve had it a solid 52 MPG measured so it’s a bit cheaper all round than a TSi and there’s no way I could have found one with the same spec as mine with a TSi for anywhere near the money and the toys do make a difference IMO.

Have you had a remap?

I found my diesel was ok, but wasn't quite happy till my remap. Changed the characteristics completely :)

Yes I have, still can’t get used to it. It’s just too, well, diesely. Can’t fault it for being cheap to run though.

I have looked at VW DPF app and calculated I will need to sell my 150hp 2.0 TDI before 150k miles.

My car has done 80k, oil ash is at 38%, 30g. So at 160k miles on the clock, it would be close to 80% full. Time to get rid before it needs replacing.

I do similar 60 miles commute, 30 miles each way, 20-25 of which is on motorway, rest is painful stop/start traffic. But this is the MINIMAL distance I'd subject my diesel to, all other local journeys are done with an EV.

Most days I do 10 miles. Maybe a long journey once a month. Not had a problem with my 2014 vrs diesel in 2 years. The DPF app is showing that my dpf is probably not as good as it should be but in 5 years time I would say its going to be far easier to get them cleaned. No, it's not ideal but when I got it 2 years ago petrols were incredibly rare in estate version, even more so with decent spec.
