Fmic / Smic options

Featured Replies

Hello Fellas,

I have an Fabia vrs Mk1 2007 absolutely stock. I am planing to do an remap / power box, but prior to dat i believe that i should take care for the intercooler and i am considering the options i have.

The reason i think of this is because yesterday i did a short pull on the 3rd gear, i did not get to 4k rpm , outside was 20 degrees and i saw the torque pro to register 54 degrees Celsius on the intake... i do not wan to think what it will register if outside was 25-30 and i did a couple of pulls till 4k...

Mine has factory xenons and i have read numerous threads that Forge is the only plug and play option over here... Unfortunately, the same are not being produced any more.. The other options - airtec, darkside and etc, but all of them require some work and to be honest are a above my budget.

I also found another thread for SMIC, but according to few fellas that have installed it, it's not worth it..

Are there any options for budget solution where it would be plug and play for FMIC? I am reading for Darkside smic, but it will not fit in my case.

Any ideas will be appreciated!

Kind regards,

George

To be perfectly frank it is simply not worth the investment unless you're definitely upgrading the turbo, simply getting a torque limited remap will give you 165 BHP which is about all the standard clutch will reliably handle, you'd be much better off spending the money on a clutch and flywheel.

54 degrees C is neither here nor there, it's a diesel, and diesels like warm air.

Mate, thanks for joining in and pointing that out for the diesels! Yes, i am planing to shoot for 160-165 hp and 370 to 380 nm of torque, so i can keep the stock clutch as much as possible.

Then keep your money in your pocket until you need to replace the clutch and flywheel, a new intercooler is some way down the list of stuff to upgrade.

Unless your turbo failed into the intercooler like mine. Then would you knowingly pair a good turbo with an intercooler full of ****e ? In that case surely £190 ( what I paid for an OEM seat sport intercooler not chinese) plus £70 for pipework seems worthwhile

So that can be another motivation, since standard crap intercoolers aren't cheap.
You could buy used SMIC coolers, but they could have come from failed setups too.

There is a VW style all alloy intercooler but its not suited for Fabia. but with similar fettling to whats required ( hassle) for the FMIC option you could achieve that. Also I did spot a german company doing a direct SMIC upgrade for Fabia on ebay, you will have to search for that though as I deleted it now.
Didn't seem that cost effective to me its about £200 where you can get a much better FMIC although in your case may make mounting a lot less hassle.

There is some quite common Fabia SMIC intercooler for sale for peanuts also that might fit but from what I understand they are underspec/ undersized cored, not designed for the vRS as they are for smaller engines

Have a search for "Intercooler upgrade discussion" and "TXAutosport intercooler" topics.

There's a great variety of price, effectiveness, and ease of fitting.
