Possible used vRS car buy SL12BDV / WAZ5736

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've found a used Mk II FL vRS that has my interest. It's a 2012 petrol that originally and currently has the plate SL12BDV but had the plate WAZ5736 from 2014 to this year during its time with its second owner. It's from a dealer and they declared there was an error in the mileage record that stopped them selling it for some time until they could get it sorted.

I did an RAC search and the error is still showing up, however. In late 2014, it had 31k miles but 64k only 23 days later. Its first MoT, in 2015, shows a mileage of 36k. It's pretty obvious that whoever put the mileage into the system in late 2014 keyed 64k instead of 34k. I really don't think the owner did 32k miles in 23 days then had the vehicle clocked.

Of greater concern to me is the MoT history:

  • 10 Mar 2017 - Fail - Offside rear coil spring fractured/broken. (+ front disc advisories)
  • 13 Mar 2017 - Pass
  • 26 Feb 2018 - Pass
  • 24 Oct 2018 - Fail - Offside rear coil spring fractured/broken (again!) - Nearside Rear coil spring corroded enough to reduce cross-sectional area/weaken it.

I notice from the dealer photos that the boot has the optional hard load liner. The dealer says the car has been "local" to Aberdeen all its life. The simplest explanation I can come up with for the multiple failures of the rear springs is that it was frequently used to carry heavy loads and the roads are of "variable quality" in the vicinity. The vehicle is "cheap", in line with Glass' price guide for a private rather than a dealer sale. Should I be concerned? Should I hand the RAC £239+ for a thorough inspection before getting on a plane and travelling up from Hampshire to buy it?

If this vehicle's former owner is in the house, I would be very grateful if you would message me. I'd like to know if there are any issues with it or things you think might become issues so I can make an informed decision on whether to go ahead with buying it.

Thanks,

Paul.

I just got a video of the car from the dealer. Looks in good condition but there are no stamps in the service book between 2015 (36k miles) and 2018 (60k miles). Should I be worried?

What is the maximum mileage/time for a 2 FL on variable servicing please?

Around 2015 Škoda stopped issuing Service Booklets as it kept everything on its data base.

When I commented on here previously about coil springs being a particular weakness with my vehicle, I've had 3 go, both front and rear. The general response given was the coil springs aren't up to the job, cheap metal, and the state of the roads.

Thanks @crocket

I've got a video from the dealer now and the service book has nothing in it from 2014 until it was serviced by the dealer now selling it.

I had a word with my main dealer. They weren't horrified as, if driven like a saint, the service interval cal be as much as 2 years/20k miles. I've asked the dealer selling it to go back to the last owner and see if they have any service receipts to cover the hole.

My car experts at work don't like it and say they would walk away. What does everyone here think please?

I snapped a front coil spring at about 70k in my Oct 2 and then 3 weeks later the other side went.   I'd personally want history evidence and if you think its been lugging loads then the rear suspension could be saggy.

Was the original MOT fail and subsequent pass at the same garage?

I can't see that from the report. I can see there was the broken spring and advisories on both front discs, front pads and both rear tyres on 10 Mar 17 then a clean MoT on 13 Mar with the car having done 62 miles in between.
