Rear washer 1z5

Featured Replies

I got 2006 estate,

The rear washer when activated is a thin dribble, is this normal on this car ?

I have changed the nozzle but still the same, is it the pump thats died ?

It's a single pump which feeds both front and rear depending on the direction of rotation.

If only the rear has poor flow I would imagine by the age of the car that at some time the screenwash has been diluted or tap water used which can allow algae to grow in pipework especially rears which are infrequently used and clog things up.

Always use screenwash, not tap water alone. Even the front wash can cause respiratory infections from stale water inhaled from the air vents.

I have the same 2006 estate and it has more of a stream than a spray from the rear.

You can try poking the jet with a thin needle to clear any blockage.

you could be right about growth in the tank, the sreen wash in it was poor when i bought it

dont think the last owner looked after it too well, only had it couple of months still ironing little issues when i can

will investigate the pump/bottle tomorrow

I always use bluecol 3 in 1 screen wash in my cars, only adding little water in summer months

I put a new nozzle on couple of weeks ago, thats all good

takes a while before the water hits the glass, the wiper has done a few wipes before it comes out which isnt good for the motor

thanks for the info MicMac

Funny you should describe the delay in the wash flowing.

That's exactly what mine does after I replaced the motor brushes in the pump... Don't ask!

I suspect I disturbed something that effectively acts as a non return valve so once the wash has been activated it slowly drains back under gravity and that's what causes the delay at the jet while the fluid travels back along the length of the pipe. I may investigate if I get really bored.

FYI the screenwash reservoir/pump/horn can be accessed by pulling the small outer grill off and removing the foglight, left-hand side as you face the car. The pump is just a push fit in a rubber grommet.

Its probably just a flap inside the pump that acts as a non return, if theres growth or crap in there or it is degraded then it will affect it

Might just get a new pump for what its worth

Cheers for the info on how to get there, it is buried deep down in the bay

does the small outer grill pop out or is there any screws ?

The grille just pops out, it can be tight if it's a virgin and you can faff around trying to ease the clips at the rear but a good strong pull straight forward away from the body is all that's needed.
