Wheel alignment, 2 versus 4 wheel?

Featured Replies

Advice request,

My car i discovered (at dealer service ) has bad inside tyre wear/scrub (see photo) and dealer says needs alignment done, price quoted is £60 +VAT.

Do Skoda dealers normally do 2 or 4 wheel alignment?

Does a front wheel drive need 4 wheels done? (2 is cheaper obviously) i.e. back tyres are showing even wear?

I'd get a full 4 wheel alignment done. Does the price include any adjustments being made?

Yes ... get a 4 wheel alignment done, I'd expect that money to include any alterations.  They may possibly take it to a garage to get it done so check whether it's done on or off site.

Shop around as it should be cheaper non main dealer.

Independant rear suspension requires alignment as well as the front.

Torsion bar rear has little or no adjustment available so there is little point unless to confirm any damage.

Hi Gerry,Excuse my ignorance, is the Octavia "Torsion bar rear" as wheel wear at rear appears even, does this mean simple front 2 wheel alignment?

Torsion bar bar/beam rear suspension is the more basic form used on non vrs or awd mk3 Octavia. Unless you suspect the rear suspension has been damaged then only a front wheel alignment is required.

rear link rear suspension has adjustments available and manifested itself on my mk2 Octavia with premature wear on the rear tyres, in the form of a saw toothed serrated profile that was incredibly noisy and sounded like a bearing going. Wear was even across the tyre though.

It was so bad I gave in and bought new tyres together with a four wheel alignment. No problems after that.

Hi Gerry

Thanks for the advice and information.

Get a hunter alignment or similar at a proper tyre shop to do it. £50

Tyres changed and front alignment done at ATS/Blackcircles.

My dealer wanted £96 to correct an alleged 1 degree error on the front right wheel camber that “failed” his alignment check during a routine service.

Amazingly, the printout showed that the left hand front has “passed” with a similar 1 degree measurement showing on the report.

I declined the offer.

there's a negative amount on the front wheels as you can see on my print out that can't be adjusted. its supposed to be like that so the car is more stable in and out of corners.
