Diesel has a higher specific energy than petrol - in volume terms - so there is some sense in the price difference.

Also the market for fuels is pretty complex with many products being transported great distances due to historic refinery configurations, regional tax incentives, changing markets, etc.. For example, some years ago the US was exporting diesel while importing petrol and the exports increased when they started adding a dash of biodiesel to qualify for subsidies/tax breaks.

  • Isn't diesel ownership a much higher proportion in France than it is here?   An increase in derv is bound to upset even more people there and they like to set fire to stuff when they're not

  • They know the cheapest / least taxed accelerant to use when setting barriers or sheep on fire.

  • Good stuff coming from the North Sea ie low SG (High API) and crappy oil from most places in the US etc (medium and dark colours), map below, a few years old but not changed hugely since then.

5-11 pence or so difference with Diesel over petrol is really the difference between Ooo & Ahhh or a ba's hair.

To a car user doing maybe 10-20,000 a year.

 

The thing is that in the UK Diesel and others fuels being delivered by road will be delivered in diesel powered vehicles for a long time into the future.

The Sea Going Fuel Tankers delivering oil or fuels are not going to be burning petrol any time soon either.

People driving sometimes a lot less than 10k/year obsess over a few pence per litre of fuel, yet are willing to pay massive depreciation costs with PCP and exorbitant dealer servicing costs (for an oil and filter change) without much complaint.

Morrisons are still the cheapest locally at 124.9p. No Asda and no fuel under 120p yet in Chesterfield.

118.9p in Middleton at the moment

124.9p here at Morrisons. No Asda nearby to compete with.

OIl under $50 a barrel, price falls to come !

It is still 1.36 for diesel in NE Wales even after I threatened them with a damn good thrashing.

Just hold off, buy half or three quarters a tank and wait for the 5p, 10p a litre drop in the next few days.

 

Sadly the Octy mk 3 non 4x4 has the silly little 50 litre tank and no scope to use the expansion tank, I could get more in the 45 litre Fabia tank !!

Just fill your tank get on with driving and the life work balance and if the fuel is £2.25 more today than tomorrow maybe take your coffee or work or from home in a flask and do not buy from Costa etc.

 

For those using cars as a tool of work with the tax breaks and even employers paying for the fuel have it out on your mileage rate with your bosses maybe and save the tears for those paying for their own vehicles and fuel.

If Russian goes to war or attempts to grab more of the Ukraine then lets see what happens to oil then road fuel prices.

If a fuel station starts to back up with too much fuel then it will look to lower its price to shift the fuel before the next fuel delivery.

 

Carrying less fuel means better mpg, better acceleration on a front wheel drive car as you have less weight in the wrong place ie over the read axle rather than front axle.

 

I find I tend to drive more economical when I fill up with a smaller fuel load ie still try and get the 500-600 miles of range even if I only fill up with 40 litres instead of 45-50 litres.

 

Offski might be trying to make you use more fuel for the benefit of Aberdeen oil industry maybe ?  :tongue:

In an early post you were complaining that the Octavia's fuel tank was too small at 50 litres.

It is. would much rather it stayed at 55 litres that it had in the Mk 1 and 2 Octy.

 

It was probably Skoda/VW reckoning that the could decrease it as they had got the fuel consumption to improve by over 10% on many models and their drive to lower the overall weight which they managed to reduce by 102 kgs between Mk2 and Mk3.

 

I am unusually in that I sometimes to 1,000 miles a week or more so sometimes have to fill up two or three times a week which is annoying.

 

Look forward to just plugging in at home and visiting petrol station rarely or never.

How many of those 1,000 miles in a week are Social, Domestic & Pleasure and from your own pocket and how many are because they are Commuting to or from work or for work?

 

Cars with 700 mile range would reduce the visits to the filling stations and they do that starting with full / heavy tanks and the weight reduces as the fuel gets used obviously.

None of it is rocket science really, just diesel cars with bigger tanks and better economy for high mileages annually..

I do not get time for Social Domestic and Pleasure as I am so busy with Hard Brexit preparation !

 

As my tax base is my home in Worcestershire I have a zero commute as I have no fixed office, though business card says Heathrow I go weeks without popping in there.  Just as likely to be at clients or my offices in Aberdeen, Glasgow, Cardiff, Liverpool, Manchester, Cambridge, Tilbury etc. 

 

Tax setup is that all fuel used is put on P11D.  Business miles, all tens of thousands of them are claimed on Self Assessment as the difference between HM Treasury rates ie 45 ppm or 25 ppm as I get no mileage allowance just fuel card and car allowance both charged through PAYE and tax coding. 

 

Lower the fuel price is the lower tax on it I will pay.  Don't think the price that is transferred to P11D is the full price shown on the pump as I gather fuel cards pay several pence per litre less than the displayed price.

I was working with the US owners of a Scottish company and one of the US people were saying a high portion of Model 3s were parked up awaiting parts. 

 

Will seriously look at upgraded LEAF 2 or Renault when they get the 60 kWh packs and it the charging network improves.  We have ten charges at our Heathrow office but I think they are only 3.2 kWh charge points ie too low, need to be at least 7 kWh which is what I would install at home and there needs to be more 22 kWh ones or even 44 kWh ones, or better, a nice coffee shop attached and the savings ie charging up for a tenner rather than effectively shelling out £60 for a refill would be very nice.

I never understand those that spend so much time working and earning and then would drive an uncomfortable car like a Nissan or Renault.

 

Maybe check out a Porsche Panamera hybrid and maybe the clients will think they are not paying your bossess too much for their services but they are worth every penny if the employees are driving nicer cars than them....

just find a good Porsche Independent Specialist for servicing...

Do not know about Nissans but I have found Renault good on the comfort side, especially goods seats on average, except the Renault 5 many years ago but that was a very cheap car and it was as good, or bad, as a Fabia One of 15 years later.  Had a big Renault, think it was an 18 or a 21, long time ago, very comfortable, softiish suspension so rolls quite a bit when hustling.   Dacia Logan similar, comy seats, softish suspension but great for long mileage. 

 

Both Leaf and Zoe seats are reckoned to be comfortable and main criticism is that you cannot lower the seats as would like due to the fat battery pack under the floor.  Both cars need longer, estate//saloon version to get the battery packs up to at least 60 kWh and with the new infrastructure that Petrol stations, super markets and I hope soon McDonalds should be offering ie drop in for a 15 minute comfort break, caffeine load up, Big Mac and charge you car up for free feels like heaven like the boys from Perth sang.
