Mk II FL fuel leak

Featured Replies

Hi,

I picked up my new Mk II FL petrol vRS on Friday. Several times since then I have caught a whiff of petrol in the passenger compartment. Standing next to it today, there was a strong smell of fuel coming from the engine compartment. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I had a look under the bonnet and there appears to be an open hose outlet on the black chamber on the front of the engine with nothing attached to it (photo) and a puddle os something that I think is probably fuel on the bell housing (was too hot to stick my finger in it and take a sniff). Am I right in thinking there should be something attached to this? If so, can you tell me what and where it should go? There is no obvious hose dangling. You can just see the wetness in the dark patch in the lower right quarter of the photo.

Thanks,

Paul.

Hi, nothing should be attached to that outlet - i have the same engine, it is the inlet mainfold you can see on the front of the engine. The wetness on the bell housing could be oil as i also have a bit on mine - although never investigated it and the photo isn't great. Not sure re the fuel smell, but am sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon. There is a high pressure fuel pump (if you pull off the engine cover it sits on the right hand side as you face the engine) i believe, it has a black hose i think coming out of it so maybe it is that that is perished?

Update: I got the car back today (had to wait to get it in because I was working.)

The fault was the seals in the high pressure fuel pump had failed after the vehicle had been unused at the dealer for a long time. When the main dealer started it, it was spraying so much fuel out that the Workshop Manager wouldn't have it in the workshop and made the poor Mechanic change the pump out in the car park. £455 all in. The dealer I got it from were very good and covered the full bill without question.

On the plus side, the engine now has noticeably more power.
