Twin-door boot not fully opening in saloon mode

Featured Replies

Hi,

Firstly apologies if this has already been answered but my searching skills are the same as my cooking skills :giggle:

My boot has started to get a mind of its own when opened in saloon mode...

It unlatches fine either with the key or from the boot-button, but then it doesn't always spring up to fully open; sometimes it'll pop a few cm and stay there; sometimes it'll rise about a foot; sometimes it'll rise 3/4 of the way and only seldom does it do the full Monty and open all the way.

Is there an easy fix for this?

Regards

Mike

The speed and distance with which the saloon boot lid opens is directly influenced by a set of gas struts.

As they wear, and especially at this time of the year when it's cold those springs / struts get... well, less springy! :D

Accessing them will be the tricky part. Once inside, the fix should be relatively quick / inexpensive.

Mine has done it for years. In the summer it'll crack you on the chin, right now it'll happily laugh at me as I approach with my hands full, opening only a few centimetres.

righto, thanks for the prompt speedy reply.

i take it you've tried "stuff" to make it work but it won't play ball?

are these springs easily replaceable or part of the complete system?

It's just how it is, the only way to improve things is to wait until summer, or replace the struts...

Notice, there are two struts per side, four in total, one shorter set for saloon mode, a longer set for hatchback mode. Unfortunately the ones you need to access are the short ones that are the hardest to get to.

You might find this thread useful if you do decide to strip the boot lid yourself...

would appreciate that site as well :)

The link is on my previous post. Be careful though, there are two different lengths of strut, one for saloon mode, another for hatchback, two different lengths and locations.

thanks again.

luckily (if i can say that :) ) the larger struts will still hold the boot up whilst i replace the smaller ones. A post-xmas project to burn off all those built-up calories ;)

Take plenty of pictures, it would make a useful how-to-guide to help others

Since I got my 14 plate facelift twindoor at 14 months old (14 k miles) it has always only unlocked and opened the boot just a little bit. Presumably they were not worn when I got the car, however I wonder if it's worth changing the struts anyway?

It might be that because the boot buttons operate differently it was opened mostly as a hatch before I got it so the boot struts may be stiff and unused - I must admit I use the hatch mode most of the time myself , however if the boot could pop fully open on the button it would be useful.

Any photos would be useful!

[EDIT] Hmm just realised - all the 1 4's    - 1.4, 14 plate , 14 months and 14k miles - spooky

Yes, from my picture above you can see the shorter struts are for the saloon mode, the longer struts are for the hatchback mode.

The longer hatchback struts are exposed. Measure them and you'll be able to eliminate them from your search.

Fair play for this instructional, I've had a non working boot for a while now and have tried a few different ideas but nothing worked until I read your post, I've just fixed mine and everything is working perfectly, thanks 😊 👍
