Battery charging via Power Socket?

Featured Replies

as the car stands for so long between use, will the Battery trickle charge via the socket with a Solar panel charger?

or will i need to connect direct to the Battery?

Yes as long as the current isn't too high (as this would take out the fuse) - which should be OK with a solar panel charger.

A friend of mine was unable to drive for six months for medical reasons and then found the battery on his Octavia III was totally flat and he couldn't open the bonnet to charge it as the passenger door was deadlocked and this obstructed the bonnet release handle(RHD car design issue!) - drivers door unlocked by the key. Breakdown company trickle charged the car through the 12v socket until there was enough juice in the battery to unlock the car normally.

Thanks for that, easier than opening/closing the bonnet every time

Trickle charging via the socket is no problem, but solar panels are. These things only work (a bit) when your car is parked in the sun and when the sun is at a very high angle. Think of Mediterranean conditions in summer.
They do not work in the dark north European winter, which is when and where you need this trickle charging...
