Very happy owner of a 2012 combi. Unfortunately the airbag and steering wheel controls have gone on the blink again. This happened about two years ago, and cost a bundle to fix. Obviously I need to get it fixed again, but has anyone any tips to stop it happening? (or get it fixed more cheaply?)

What do mean by airbag controls?

 

Can you remember what parts were replaced last time to enable to the buttons on the steering wheel to work again?

By airbag I mean the airbag is not working. Dashboard light, warning light, the works. From memory the part that's gone again will be the slip ring.

Strange, those parts are normally pretty reliable if correctly fitted.

 

I'd start by getting an autoscan done using VCDS or similar to find out what the fault is before assuming it's the same as last time.

Perhaps not so relevant to the mk2 - but when it all stopped working on my mk1 - there was a fuse issue on the battery IIRC.

Theres only one way to fix the slip ring cheaper..... do it yourself

Cost was £5 for a cheap ribbon cable, and about 30 min total figuring out how to take it apart, solder it again, etc

 

The cheapest ones on eBay at the time however, were £110~.... you can fit it yourself relative easily but you'll need a spline socket as well as some Torx bits.
