EGR off 1.6 tdi(CAYC) advice

Featured Replies

Dear fellow Octavia friends

I need your advice regarding EGR off.

I've recently started on a new job which is very close to my home(about 8 kilometers). Before I drove about 90 kilometers per day, but it is reduced to about 16-18 per day.

I own a Skoda Octavia greenline 1.6 tdi from 2010, which I very much enjoyed but I also know that a diesel aren't the best car for short journeys. The thing is that I don't have the money to buy a petrol car for the time being and I don't want to either. So I thought about having a tuner disconnecting the EGR valve through the ECU so that I reduce/eliminate soot buildup in the intake and engine. My question is: do I also need to install blanking plates between the exhaust and EGR cooler or is that overkill?

My thought was that exhaust gasses are stikk able to travel into the EGR cooler although the EGR valve function is deleted from the ECU, and thereby there would still be a risk of the EGR cooler would fail/leak over time?

I had the EGR cooler replaced early this year and it was pretty expensive. So I'm looking for a solution that can set my mind at ease.

Thanks

If the EGR is mapped out of the ECU then it should remain closed. Sometimes, though, it sticks slightly open. For this reason I would insert a blanking plate.

It's an easy job to just put a blanking plate on the EGR outlet as it's at the front of the engine and can be easily accessed. I put blanking plates at both sides of mine....just to block it off completely.

OK. Thanks for your input :-)

I was also hoping for an easy solution since the exhaust side of the EGR valve is a nightmare to get too.

By the way have you experienced any difference in operation(performance, mileage, DPF regens etc.) since you disabled yours?

Mine is used as a Taxi so does tend to regen quite a lot. Since the EGR delete regens are slightly further apart but still very regular. Apart from that nothing else to report.

BTW I use a bluetooth ELM and VAG DPF (on Android)  and try to get on a Faster Road whenever regens occur.
