control module checksum errors

Featured Replies

Hello. I wonder if anyone has time to help with a couple of simple questions.

Someone suggested corrupt software could be causing problems. Corrupt software would mean it would fail a checksum comparison, right?

If I had a BCM, TCM, or ECU with an EEPROM checksum error, would I see a trouble code or could I just get cranky behaviour.

The wiring checks out OK and there isnt any sign of corroded contacts etc.

The tools to read and write EEPROMs dont look too expensive or difficult to use. Would that be a sensible next step.

Big question: if it really is corrupt software, is it just a case of finding the right data file and just reprogramming using the j1850 OBD II connector?

Is there any reason why this process wouldnt work for the different possible control modules: ecu, bcm, and the semi-auto J514 control box?

Could I at least check the checksums? This seems like a simple cheap harmless check.... is it really something I should do as an early diagnostic in general, before spending hours messing about accessing the deeply-hidden connectors on the wiring harness

Thanks in advance!

(also if you know of some good trustworthy resources on the web, I'm keen to educate myself... a lot to learn)

There isn't much context for your questions...

Do you have an autoscan and a list of symptoms you're having?
