check this out: not only do they do DIY kit instructions for hooking up your iPod or other MP3 player to your head unit, but they seem to have the holy grail - which lets you keep your autochanger and add line-in for your mp3 player as well with just a simple switch:

If you've already got the CD Changer, you don't need a VWCDPIC to trick the head unit into thinking a CD Changer is installed; there really is a CD Changer installed!

What you need to do is splice into the audio signal wires and install a double pole, double throw switch to let you select between the CD Changer's audio and your MP3 player's audio. Shouldn't cost you more than $5 and some time with a soldering iron.

right: got a plan. mount ipod dock in tray under head unit so it can slide out, use line out from that to splice into relay-switched switchbox. feed power via the ipod dock to charge it up (going to get cheap car charger for ipod and cut the fag lighter end off and hard wire it). plan is that plugging ipod into the dock will charge it, and drawing charge will flip relay to switch the line out from the ipod to the autochanger left and right channels.

upshot: hidden dock/charger in accessory drawer that will autoswitch.

reckon can do this for about 10 quid in bits...

doubt you'd be able to use a relay mate, they magnetic field emitted by the electricity passing through the cables will probably knacker the audio signal.

nah, should be fine. small 12v relay to throw a DP switch to flip audio connections from CD to ipod. hopefully the ipod'll draw enough current to work the relay: if it doesn't it's over to www.pinouts.ru and a detailed look at the dock connector.

if i can't get the relay working i'll wire it up to a second heated rear window switch and fit it to one of my blanking plates...

You'll be fine if you use an SSR not a mechanical relay

i used a mechanical 12v relay to try and auto switch a video line and it screwed the signal up a treat

I've just fitted a thingy made by soundlinx that enables a 3.5mm input (ie any headphone out) to the HU. It has a push-button switch that switches from the cd changer to the new input and works a treat.

which head unit? I am trying to find somethign like this for the stream in the Octy II

It says Grundig MS-502 in the blurb ...
