Looking at a skoda

Featured Replies

Hello there.

I have  the option of a 2005 Octavia 2.0 FSI Elegance petrol automatic estate, and was hoping someone could give me some advice about what to look out for after I've kicked the tyres etc.

Thanks in advance

Got any cash to throw for decent diagnostics? Id personally be very careful with older FSI and DSG cars..

Thanks for that.

I've a basic OBD reader, but, unfortunately, money is the constraint, which is why I'm looking at cars at this price. This car comes with a full service history and three months guarantee. the trouble is most people don't get rid of a car because it's the finest on the road, so, when buying second hand I have to hope any faults are manageable. That is until I win the Lottery :)

Regards

Welcome.

Full Service Histories are good.  What matters was things done at those services & was it all to the Schedule / Guidelines.

Plugs changed, gearbox service done, brake fluid changed etc and not just Oil & Filters to an interval and look see without Servicing & Maintenance to Brakes, steering etc.

So look for Invoices, receipts etc.

Belts, Tyre condition, wipers, windscreen etc.

Check the Advisories on the last couple of MOT's, and anything that failed a MOT if that happened and then what was required.

Thank you For the welcome, Skoffski.

So basically, just the usual? There's nothing specific to this model I should look out for?

Have you checked the VED (road tax) which could be pricey on a petrol automatic from that era. Many owners don't want to pay upto 50% per year on the value of their car. Some may be worth only £1,000 but road tax can be over £500 per year for example.

A very good point, at the moment it's £315. I know I should be more prudent but I hate small cars (mainly because I'm too fat to fit in them).
