Engine warning light - where?

Featured Replies

2000 X 1.9 TDi SLX

I see posts on here with people saying that their engine warning light has come on, and the car has gone into "safe" mode, etc.

Basically, I was wondering which warning light this is?

I assumed all important lights come on when you start the car. The top six lights in the little centre rectangle do this on my car.

When I looked in the manual it said the engine warning light was over in the rev counter, but I don't seem to have a light there (the manual did have a * next to this saying it may not be present on all models), and when you get bright sunlight shining on the dash there doesn't seem to be any outlines for it, so I don't think it is a bulb blown or anything.

Could anyone point me in the right direction?

The engine warning light is orange and shows an outline of an engine. I *think* it comes on then goes out again when you start the car. If the ECU wants to alert you to a problem it will show this light. It'll either not go out after starting the car or it will come on while driving.

However, depending on the fault it may or may not go into "limp mode". This can be identified by a sudden loss of performance and may or may not be accompanied by the engine warning light.

hey all, new on here.

i have just bought a skoda fabia 1.4 classic (AC) 2001 Yreg, and as i set off this morning the EPC light didn't go off. it stayed on when i drove to work (only a couple of minutes).

does anyone know what this is?

please reply asap. thanks, Tracey

Tracey, it would usually indicate a fault with the EPC system on the car.

It is normal for warning lights to come on when there is a fault with their related system. For example the ABS light would normally come on when there is a fault with the braking system.

It would be interesting to see if the light remains on when you next start the car. If it does then it looks like you'll need to take it to the dealership or other knowledgable person (with the right computer software) to have a diagnostic check.

If it is just intermittent, should i ignore it, or still get it looked at?

I'm going to take it to a friend of ours, who is a mechanic and he always looks at our cars, and see what he says. i'll get him to look at the light at the same time.

my partner also has a skoda, so we are thinking about investing in the VAG-COM stuff. so we could get the fault code from that.

EPC light will prolly be either the brake light switch or throttle body, id go with the first one.

Pretty sure an x plate TDi doesnt have an engine warning light.
