The "Superb I" has in line (North/South) engines as per Audi A4/A6 etc and the B5 VW Passat. Lovely and easy to get at most engine things under the bonnet.

Gearbox was at the back of the engine,  more or less where it would be for RWD, but the final drive had to be underneath the gearset to drive the front wheels which brought the whole lot up a bit.

It leaves the engine very far forward and high up. This layout is still used in. most modern Audis.

i thought something was underneath there , old age :)

Erm- Yes

Look under the car and follow the driveshafts... It's been the Audi way for many years.

This makes the cambelt changes cost a bit more as the front bumper etc has to come off ?

Once Front bumber removed (easy-ish) and radiators swung to one side it's then a very easy access job.

Other jobs such as EGR, Turbo, thermostat, sensors very accessible, tandem fuel/vacuum pump is more difficult.

I could do it in under an hour on my B5 Passat. Not having A/C I could just unhook the radiator too rather than having to keep stuff hooked up and out of the way. The actual belt and waterpump change took about 25-30 minutes once I had access.

Is that a  PD engine "PUMPE DUESE" ?

Yes it is - looks the same as my old car under the bonnet.

PS whoever this car belongs to, seeing those leaves - check that the plenum chamber drains aren't blocked
