Eco mode doesn't engage on startup, even though selected by default

Featured Replies

Hi, I've had a search for this but can't find any other report of this occurring.

I have a 19 Kodiaq 132TSI 4x4 and I like driving around with the engine in Eco mode.  By default, I have the Individual mode set with some settings in comfort, others in sport, but the Drive mode in Eco.  When I start the car I can see on the dash that my individual mode is set, but the gear indicator on the (virtual) dash reads D (or D1, D2, D3 etc.).  When I drive, it behaves like it's not in Eco mode, but rather just normal Drive mode - this is particularly noticeable when coasting as it stays in gear, whereas when properly in Eco mode it disengages the gear and revs drop to idle.

If I press the mode button after starting the car, then re-select my Individual mode (or the Eco mode) from the pre-selections available, the dash gear indicator then switches to E (or E1, E2, E3 etc.), and the car then behaves properly in Eco mode, idling when coasting etc.

So no matter what I do I can't get the mode to be in Eco on startup - I always have to select Eco or Individual mode after startup (even if this is already the selected default mode) to get Eco drive mode to engage.

I've only had the car since Christmas eve, and it's been a great upgrade from the Ford Territory it's replaced, but this is just one of those things I guess.  :)

You need to look a bit harder then - there are many threads from first-time DSG drivers (including me!).

The gearbox always defaults back to 'normal' (D), even though the engine mode stays on Eco or Sport. It's crap. It's annoying. There's no way to do anything about it... other than forget about Eco because it's not actually particularly useful (apart from maybe the coast function). And you can always tap into Sport by pushing down on the gearbox when you're wanting to overtake (driving round constantly in Sport is stupid, unless you like the sound of high-pitched revving all the time).

The quickest fix I’ve found is to tap the “Off road” button twice before you set off. That’s the least hassle way of putting it properly in “E” mode, assuming it was in it before.

MrTrilby, thanks - that'll do!  Easier than having to find a button on the touchscreen.  I'll give it a go tomorrow  :)

It’s an odd software bug, because my 2016 Superb always remembered it was in Eco mode when it was next used.

I use the off-road button double tap method.

Thankyou, the double-tap of the off-road button is a good solution, which I've been using for a couple of days now after your advice.

Although, I'm reconsidering using the Eco mode when driving around town.  It's too slow in changing gears when going up hills, trying to stay in 6th/7th at 50kph.  The throttle has a different response rate to my old car, and I'm finding that the Kodiaq needs to be given quite a bit more boot to get it to kick back a gear, but then the power really surges once you get past that point.  There's a sweet spot but it'll take me a bit to get used to hitting it every time I think.

The tapping twice of the offroad button would really be applicable to kodiaq with 4x4, front wheel only kodiaq like mine, wont be able to apply that hack.

Eco mode on an SUV :D
