Air filter & battery disconnect

Featured Replies

When fitting a "performance air filter", should the battery be disconnected for the ECU to adjust to the new filter?

I've never done this on previous cars, so was wondering if this is BS or if there is any worth in doing this?

You could, doing so will reset the learned fuel trims, in reality though an air filter on its own won't make a great difference and any minor changes required by the ecu will be learned after a few miles of driving.

dont think it will make any difference.

ECUs use flash & non-volotile memory these days so dont require battery power to keep saved values.

Normally they have a couple of capacitors which keep a voltage on one of the micros input lines. If this voltage has dropped when the ecu is repowered they reset a load of stored values.

That's why they usually tell you to unplug them for 30 minutes.

Thanks both.

Not sure what resetting the stored values means in relation to the filter, does that mean it is worth killing the power for 30 mins?

No it's not worth it. As Gabbo said, chances are it won't do anything. Best to just let the car relearn itself.

Excellent. Thank you.
