Notchy/Jagged gear change

Featured Replies

Hi all, just looking some advice, if possible.

I have a 14 plate Superb Estate, I have had it about 4 months.

From the start I have found gears 1-3 and reverse quite notchy/jagged when changing, 4- 6 is alot better, I was just wondering if anyone else finds this with their car, or similar? there is no crunch, but its far from a clean change.

It has been back to the dealer I bought it from, several times, first they greased it up, then changed the cables and mechanism(allegedly), its not quite as stiff as it first was, but the nochiness/jaggedness is still very much there, and is ruining the whole driving experience of the car.

I be greatful on your thoughts, many thanks.

I'm assuming it's a manual here.

Could be a problem with the clutch: if it's not releasing fully then the gearchange would be quite notchy.

Beyond that you're into internal issues: bearings, synchromesh, etc.

It might be good to get an independent mechanic to look at it and see what's going on.

Hi Chimaera, yes its a 6 speed manual box.

Thank you for your thoughts.

I have noticed a clink/spring, like noise, when pushing the clutch in, I dont hear it every time, but its there.

I was thinking synchromesh, but the car hasnt even done 50000 miles yet.

I think chimaera's suggestion is a good one. I have the 6 speed manual gearbox and all gears show no jagged feel. Getting into Reverse is smooth.

On a 5 speed VAG manual I owned previously, I did experience issues just as you describe. That turned out to be a clutch problem requiring a replacement (luckily this was covered by its 1 year second hand warranty).

The other possibility here is the clutch pressure plate failure that's been killing clutches (and occasionally gearboxes). One of the fingers in the spring snaps off and does damage. There's a really long thread which covers it pretty well here.

Thanks for the replies it is very much appreciated.

I have 2 months warranty left, but I get the impression the dealer knows there is a more serious issue, but doesn't want to deal with it.

They did book it in with Skoda, who told me they found some contamination(fragments) in the oil and they flushed it, but they wouldn't provide me with a copy of the tech report, which was a concern.

I will get it booked in again, and insist it is sorted, but i am not hopeful.

Hi I've owned a 2014 superb 2.0tdi for 2 months now and I have exactly the same problem it has just done 40000 miles and the gear change is very clunky I also took it back to the dealer who said they couldn't fault it but a local clutch + gearbox center said it felt as though it was something to do with the gear linkage under the gearstick

Hi Tulseface, its a bit of a nightmare, its ruins the whole driving experience, thanks for sharing your issue.

I took mine to a local, independent Vag specialist garage, to be assessed, and they are of the opinion that it's a dualmass flywheel issue with mine, apparrently a known issue with these cars, there is 48000 miles on mine.

I hope you get sorted, let me know if you do.
