Needs to be rocked to start

Featured Replies

Have an Octavia that won't start. Everything looks good when I turn the key, dash lights come on etc but when I turn key to start the "clutch" indication comes up on dash even though clutch is pushed down. I've found if I push the car a few meters back and forth it starts no problem. It's particularly bad in cold weather which made me this battery but the engine turns over OK once the car has been "rocked".

Any ideas as this is getting to be a proper pain!!!

As you have to rock it, it looks like the starter motor is jammed.

This can happen if the solenoid is not engaging the motor to the starter ring fully or the starter motor contacts at the end of the solenoid are shot, or the battery is on its way out and cannot supply enough current.

As you can start the engine after rocking the car, one must assume the battery is probably OK and the fault is in the starter motor.

Sometimes it is possible clean the starter motor mechanical parts but I would exchange for a refurbished unit.

I made some assumptions about the type of starter motor fitted. It would be helpful for future if you could add your car details in your signature such as model, trim, year etc.

+1:)
