Should I Expect A Failed EGR Cooler to be Picked Up During Skoda 'Health Check'?

Featured Replies

I have a sneaky suspicion my EGR Cooler may have failed again.

In August 2016 my EGR Cooler was replaced by Skoda under an aftermarket extended warranty after I noticed an issue with a 'gaseous' smell entering the cabin, and a slight hissing noise coming from the engine.

I have recently started to notice a smell in the cabin similar to the one when the EGR Cooler had failed, though not the hissing sound from the engine bay.  Just before Xmas my vehicle was at the dealers for servicing and the Health Check came back with 'Greens' for all components.  No advisories, not even the customary 'corrosion front and rear brakes noted'.

If the EGR Cooler has failed, would or should it have been noticed during the service health check?

Many thanks,

Fin

The health check consists of nothing more than a brief visual inspection of tyres, brakes and suspension etc. You might have seen one of those videos the mechanic records and then emails to you.

Unless there is an obvious defect, i.e. leaking fluids, strong smells, strange noises, warning lights, fault codes etc. I wouldn't expect it to be picked-up.

Thanks for that.

When I took it in for its recent service I mentioned the smell and the previously failed EGR Cooler and they quoted me £90 straight away just to have a look.

Both my local dealerships didn't cover themselves in glory the last time it failed as both gave it a clean bill of health when I mentioned it to them at two services. It was actually the independent engineer  appointed by the after market warranty company that diagnosed it as faulty.
