ECU short HELP

Featured Replies

Guys I did an oopsie, accidently shorted the positive from the battery to the ecu case, now when I turn the key to live everything is fine all the lights except there is a loud clicking noise from a black box behind the fuses in the footwell and the engine doesn't start, checked the fuses in the battery and in the cabin and they are fine.. Ideas?

Sounds like a relay is having trouble / damaged, could even be the onboard power supply unit itself thats fried.

J519...... yep thats it

Take note about removing and needing diagnostics........However "if" its fried then that wont help anyway.

Do you have a scan tool ?

Only a Carista Bluetooth dongle, or I need a physical one

Don't know anything about that item.....I "doubt" it has the capability you need if im honest. Ideally you need VCDS or similar.

Have you tried it ? and see if any fault codes ?

So both relays 53 and 643 are the ones clicking, but after testing with multimeter they are fine, another clue pointing at j519?

Which positions on the relay panel are these two relays in (to aid finding out their functions) and what is the engine code of your car (written on sticker on boot floor).

With those pieces of information I may be able to give you some clues through looking at circuit diagrams.

Oh, and date or at least year the car was manufactured would be good too.

Assuming it was the engine ECU you shorted the battery to, any reason not to believe the problem will be found in or near that?

So a little more information, all the fuses and relays are fine, the radio doesn't work, also there is a relay like clicking coming from the spark leads module, now for what you asked:

Its a CBZA manufactured in OCTOBER 2010(says in charge pipe) and for the position I would need something to compare too, but relay 53 is in the upper row in the middle or one to the right, and relay 643 is in the bottom row in the centre, a mechanic showed me that relay 643 was in pos 14 or 15 which is the engine control or something (he was working didn't want to bother since he was doing a favour) if you have a diagram for the relays I could say where they are, and yes since both click but are in working order the problem could lay higher above, either J519 or ECU.

Does the relay board look like this?

It is a little hard to compare, going to try to take a awkward picture to post here.

The so-called "Main relay" in position 13, known as J271 in the circuits, is controlled by an engine ECU connection.

Suggest checking the two main earth wires coming out of the engine ECU, pins 1 and 2 of the 94 way connector, both brown.  If you've burnt those out, the engine ECU will struggle to control anything.

Here are the best pictures I could take, can you tell their position from this?

Thanks, a friend of mine says it should be ground wires or ecu just like Wino said, will be my next step.

It's fixed!! A friend of mine opened the ECU and found the two earth pins were toast, he soldered a wire joining them and everythings good so far! Thank you both for you help @Wino @UrbanPanzer
