2012 1.8TSI - does it have oil consumption problems?

Featured Replies

Seen a 2012 1.8 TSI combi with 127k miles for sale that has piqued my interest.

I know the 1.8 TSI engineerings has problems with piston rings. Is this the case on all years, or had the problem been solved by 2012?

Are there any other problems I should look for?

By 2012 the piston rings had been changed from the version 1.5mm thick with the tiny 0.5mm holes, to the slightly larger version which was 2mm thick and which had 1mm holes. The only difference between these two versions is that the larger holes take longer to clog... It took VAG another few years (to 2015 or 2016?) to change to the much better waffle type piston rings, as shown below:

When combined with more frequent oil changes (max 10.000 miles or 15.000 km), these seem to be problem free.

Sounds like you've already seen this thread. Some interesting bedtime reading if not...

Sorry to resurrect an older thread but this is exactly what I was hoping to find.

I have just bought a 2012 (registered July, CDAA engine code) 1.8 Superb estate and I seem to have bought into an interesting engine line!

The check oil warning came up after 100 miles, and it was just under the top of the minimum. I filled it to above middle, marked it, and am monitoring (hasn't moved at all over another 150 miles so far).

Car last recorded service early Jan, possible they just didn't fill oil properly I suppose... but paranoid of course! Servicing

Dealer apologised, reimbursed the oil cost, committed to resolve and wants an update 1k miles in if there's any further consumption.

Car has had variable servicing, some 10k or 15k, one 20k (now at 80k). If I don't see much more oil consumption in the next 750 miles I was going to treat it to another service and hope it was a mistake. I plan on 10k servicing moving forward.

Reading this appears to support what I've read on Audi forums about this engine having been rectified for the piston rings issue, but wasn't sure it had been extended to the Skoda 1.8's at the same time. Is there any way I can be certain of it? Anything supporting that 2012 cars are not problematic, as 2011 ones certainly seem to be!

I hope it's an easy fix as the car is superb (no pun intended).

Thanks in advance.
