Skoda Auto considers new 4x4 models

Prague, March 23 (CTK) - Czech car maker Skoda Auto is considering the production of another two cars with all-wheel drive, the Ekonom weekly says in the latest issue, out today.

Unofficial information says Skoda is preparing a successor to its Skoda Superb sedan, which would have five doors and a 4x4 version for an extra fee, the weekly says.

"I cannot comment on this. We are making analyses now," said Skoda spokesman Jaroslav Cerny.

A source from the company said Skoda managers had to fight with some officials at Volkswagen, Skoda's owner, who are afraid a five-door Superb would be a serious rival to VW Passat, above all on Central European markets.

Skoda is also working on its small offroad Yeti. The serial version should be a 4x4 car as customers would probably reject an offroad with two-wheel drive, adds the weekly.

Does five doors mean a hatch for the Superb then? I wonder

Good to see they note customers would prefer a 4x4 yeti

2WD offroad would seem a contradiction in terms. Mind you, having driven a LWB Landrover around an African desert for several months I was amazed at how far some of the locals could get in tiny 2WD nissan pickups. Frankly, the Landrover was crap once you were off the tracks and was always getting stuck requiring tows from tractors or several hours digging and jamming of rocks under the wheels before it would pull out of the sand.

Does this also mean that they're considering a 2.0 TDi Octavia Estate 4x4? I hope so because they have a guaranteed customer if they do.

I think they mean a Superb Combi, that's what it says on auto.cz.

They also mentioned a couple of weeks ago that the Yeti would be 4x4. This is made possible because it is on the same platfrom as the Roomster which has bits of new and old Octavia platforms (which both were sold with 4x4)

A Superb estate +/- 4x4?

I would imagine Volkswagen would be cacking themselves at the thought.

With Audi moving their 4x4 product to the Q7, I'd say there is an ideal gap for an Allroad style Superb estate.

look who's back....nice to see you again mate. how's tricks (pm reply best i guess)

A superb combi 4x4....yes please. i'd even live with the enormous ride height for one of those.

:iagree:

I think there is also a market for a 4x4 Discovery-esque Skoda too.

Why won't skoda make the 4x4 available with decent engines. A 2.0TFSI 4x4 with circa 180bhp would be awesome. Likewise, if the Mk1 was available with the 130PD engine, they would have sold like hotcakes.

A Yeti vRS with the 2.0 TFSI has been rumoured, but thats a long way off!

its about time that the skoda superb was equiped with four wheel drive, its been around for long enough, and its high time it was brought out, also why was the 4x4 octavia not marketed in the uk, I own one and would certainly buy another, they are likely to lose customers to the mark if they don\t cater for them

The Superb is already a competitor for the Passat isn't it? Or is the badge holding it back?

I admit, an estate superb would be very nice, especially in 2.5 V6 TDi form (maybe 4WD too!). :)

imagine a Fabia 4x4 vRS combi with the 180 1.8t or 160PD from thre ibiza FR

i dont think the problem with Skoda not building certain cars is any restriction at Skoda, more likely from VAG as most of not all the Skoda range can be targeted at a VW or Audi. Only Seat dont actually appear to directly "compete" with the other makes and they have a pretty free reign.

The new Superb will be a 3-box sedan with quite a unique boot access - either you open just a lid like at current Superb and throw in a suitcase or you switch into large rear hatch and open it like at Octavia and load in an armchair in IKEA. Simply...clever :-) Octavia Combi 4x4 2.0TDI (140hp) goes into production in July. Roomster is using front chassis module from the new Fabia and rear modul from Octavia I. No plans for Roomster 4x4 but an off-road looking version (fwd only) in pipeline. Also planned Octavia Combi 4x4 in stiffer look (like allroad, xc, outback etc.).

:D they need a Superb vRS to come inline with the S-Line type audi models

let me in let me in let me in!! i have rights!!! lol:D
