Troubles with changing glow plugs

Featured Replies

Hello

I just bought four new glow plugs for my 1,6 TDI 2011 Octavia. My problem is that I can't get the plastic plug off from my plug. i've tried to follow different guides from Hayes etc, but nothing happens. It's loose and i can screw the plastic both ways, but it won't come up. I haven't tried to disconnect the coolant pipe or anything yet, but I can't see that it should be the problem.

Do I just have to wait for the temperature to rise (it's about -10 celsius in Norway now, and my car won't even start), or should I get it towed and repaired?

I appreciate any help you guys can give me!

Try brute strength!

Pretty sure they just pulled up when I did this although they might have been quite stiff.

Seriously though, once you suss how to remove the parts I would recommend starting the engine on easy start spray.

Trying to remove glow plugs on a frozen engine is a recipe for disaster as they often seize and shear when removing from a cold engine.

Ideally you'd get the engine real hot, at least up to operating temperature even if that means driving with the heater at reduced output to keep more of it in the engine.

You can substitute easy start spray with some other aerosol, perhaps WD-40, air duster, deodorant, lighter gas, even an unlit camping stove with the butane valve open... Improvise, adapt, overcome.

I'd also wait until the engine was fully cold before fitting the replacements, use graphite/copper anti seize on the threads and torque to spec.

Workshop manual recommends using a 12mm spanner to lever the boots off although mine came off with a sharp pull by hand
