TPMS threshold

Featured Replies

Had TPMS on 6 cars now since 2005 (2 x BMW, 1 x Nissan, 3 x VAG) and in that time had 3 genuine alerts and no false alarms.

For the record the BMW's were both ABS based, the Nissan valve based and all the VAG cars have been ABS based.

My experience has been that the ABS based ones alerted you when the pressure had dropped about 10 psi wheras the valve based system alerted with only a 3 psi drop.

Checked pressured Monday this week on my trusty 40 year old stick gauge which said 3 were at 31 psi and the other at 32 psi, left it as was.

Yesterday on the M1 got an alert so slowed down and as intended left at the next exit. parked in a layby off the motorway walked round the car, kicked the tyres and all looked OK. Reset the TPMS and drove to Tesco and got 50 pence worth. Their gauge said 2 were at 29 psi, 2 was at 31 psi and the other at 32 psi. Inflated all to 32 psi and reset TPMS again. Drove another 80 miles with no further issues. Checked this morning with my trusty gauge and 2 were at 33 psi and 2 at just over 32 psi.

My question is simple, is the TMPS more sensitive now than in the past to pressure drops. What is Skodas threshold?

No idea the threshold but have always had the system that can detect a tyre changing a few psi from the cold setting and then when tyres are up to heat and when i check the tyre pressure hot if there is a warning i hold the digital thermometer to the tyres and see if any are heating up more than the others.

Sometimes they do due to the slight under inflation and sometimes a brake binding or a wheel bearing going.

Less than £1 each and kept beside the Tyre Pressure Gauge.

My 13reg.Roomster Scout used to alert me to a PSI different of around 4PSI and my current Fabia estate 67 reg has once warned me with a drop of 5-6PSI so little change really there.
