Can you enable side assist?

Featured Replies

I've read a few other topics which have touched on this, more so how it works, but my question is whether you're able to enable side assist, or blind spot monitoring on your car.

I've got quite a highly specced up VRS (park assist, front assist, lane assist, allsorts of assists) but I'm struggling to see if this is a viable option.

The closest I've come to any sort of answer was on a Golf forum, but he had to install sensors / radars on his car.

Can anyone clarify if this is a VCDS tweak able to be completed easily, or are additional parts required?

cheers

You need the radars in the rear bumper. And a set of mirrors that have the LED lights in. I’m not sure on the coding either but it’s all doable.

That'll be the parts which were getting spoken about with the Golf.

From what I can understand, there is a little more to it than a bit of coding.

After searching a bit more, I've found this Side Assist retrofit Octavia on the ross tech website and the bloke there was having a bit of trouble getting his parts to work. It doesn't appear to be just a plug and play job unfortunately.

I was only looking at having it as yet another safety feature, as I soon be doing more motorway driving. My blind spot always appears to attract herberts to sit in it.

Be cheaper and easier to turn your head slightly!

:p

You can get a retro fit blind spot kit from cars-equipment I think. Instead of the light in the mirror you'd fix the warning light into the a pillar trim.

Have you tried\had experience of this feature on another car tunedude? I've just had a courtesy Insignia for just over a week and found it utterly annoying!

I've not had it but I've it on cars on the motorway as I've been overtaking. Their mirror light have been coming on as I've coming past. Admittedly that's at night and if they can't see me or my headlights they need their eyes checking.

It's more daylight I'd assume it would be beneficial. I'm conscious of doing a shoulder check any way (the biker in me) but it's just more an extra line of safety I was thinking of.

Best part is as you overtake and the other car indicates, you see those lights flash. You, as overtaking car in their blind spot, know the other driver is aware of your presence. Everyone feels safer on the road.

As with all those gadgetry, I'd love to have it in my car. But I wouldn't go to any length to retrofit it. Definitely can't VCDS enabled afterwards as it requires radars in the bumpers.

The problem is you also have the indicator light in your mirror so you either think you've left yours on or panic because you think you've seen someone else indicating towards you in the corner of your eye. It also keeps flashing if you're static and cars are passing you.
