i have owned a 2007 mk2 octavia fsi elegance estate for a number of years now with 95000 on the clock, its been a good servant, but now i've seen a 2011 yeti 1.2 tsi SE plus with 41,000 on the clock and i'm very very tempted.  Trouble is i'm being put off by some of the  scaremongering reviews, like 'Honest John' etc about timing chains/belt and other niggles etc.  Anyone want to put my mind at ease?, as i no nothing about cars tbh other than what i research. 

ps......i'm hoping to go see the yeti tomorrow might even talk part exchange but i seriously need advice.

Yes the timing chain is suspect and likely to fail at around this mileage. However if it has been changed already for the improved chain, or you get it done as part of the deal to buy the car it will be fine one to buy.

Yes, just make sure the timing chain has been changed. Should have been by now but if not get it done as part of the deal. I had a 2010 1.2Tsi Yeti for 5 years before changing for another 1.2 in 2017, both faultless.

I got in touch with the dealer about the cars history with regards to the timing chain.  This was the reply...

‘The engine doesn’t rattle when it starts .. timing chain cannot be adjusted  because it’s an automatic adjuster .’

what does this mean?

Is this a Skoda Main Dealer or a car dealer having you on or ones that know nothing about the TPI's and the Upgrade Kit?

I'm not very knowledgeable on the subject, but if the dealer cannot show that the cambelt has already been changed I think you shoukd factor a new one into the cost. 

^^^ It is not a cambelt, it is a timing chain that should not have needed replacing if there was not a fundamental design, manufacturing failing.

Hence upgraded parts, and a change in design.

You know there can be issues and people have had to spend money to repair 1.2 TSI that have been wrecked and others have had no issues.

Just decide if you maybe want to buy the car and then have a competent mechanic do the upgrade.  Or just join the lottery.

If you do ever need a Main dealer i take it you would never use Parks then.

Best check the cars Service and Warranty History then maybe with Ingrams or Skoda UK.

Being told it does not rattle on start up really is not good enough.

I have first hand experience of 1.2 tsi of this year. There is a known fault with cam chain. My advise if you can't 100% sure the car has had cam chain sorted walk away. Also, is this a manual yeti or dsg?
