Having a bit of trouble installing my head unit namely the fact that I cant get the tray back in after I've put the head unit in. So far I've pulled out old stereo, fitted the fascia plate on (the thin plate thing) and pulled out the tray (to make it easier to sort out the wires underneath.

Then I pushed the metal cage from the Pioneer into the top which has scraped up all the plastic inside. Now..

1) Am I doing the right thing?!?!

2) I cant get the tray back in after I installed the headunit (plus metal cage).

Can anyone help as its really getting on my nerves now..

I had a 77 in my vRS right at the start. Eventually converted back to the std HU as it was too bright at night. Anyway....

Everything WILL fit back in, but it's incredibly tight. I think what I evenutally ended up doing was getting the cage and HU in place, then placing the tray in underneath, and pushing everything back in at the one time. I think I might even have filed away some of the existing plastic on the inside of the dash, to help ease the cage in but I can't be sure, it's too long ago now.

Others have this model fitted, and might have worked out different ways of getting everything back in!

I know it's annoying but you'll get there eventually

Good tip about the air vents, had never occured to me that. Doing that will hopefully make it much easier to maneouvre the wiring so that everything can fit back into place.

I found on mine that if the tray was fully fitted before putting the cage/HU back, they wouldn't go that few extra mm to fit flush with the dash...

Did you have to shave off the "fins" on the top of the tray in order for them to both fit in? When I was pushing both in they both seemed to bend to the pressure!! Is it just a case of holding your breath and pushing as hard as you can hoping nothing breaks? :eek:

The air vents trick sounds good - where do I start to remove it? Only my second head unit install and this one is much harder than the polo so gotta excuse me!

Am I doing something wrong in that case cause I cant seem to push the metal cage in far enough when the tray is already in.. :confused:

Then id say yes, I fitted mine with no hassles.

The metal cage that came with the pioneer seems to be scraping the inside of the plastic, is that normal? It's really really hard to push in properly..

Do I have to get another metal cage or something? The head unit fits inside it perfectly though.

Its normal, give it a tap in using a block of wood or similar.

I'll give it another go tomorrow - it's time to get nasty with it!
