Drilling hole in bulkhead / installing cabin heater

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

Tried looking allover for a similar earlier post, but haven't found one. Hope someone can help me with this.

I recently imported a 2010 Skoda Fabia Combi (Greenline, 1.2TDI) to the North of Sweden where I live. Considering the climate here, most cars have an engine block heater and cabin warmer (small electric heater near the front passenger seat to warm the car before departure). After hearing the engine's trouble with starting in -20C and freezing myself while driving, I decided on install both of these myself. I've installed the block heater and it works fine. I need help with the other part.

To install the cabin heater, I need to run a cable from the engine bay to the floor of the front passenger seat. The cable needs a 25mm diameter hole, so it is quite big. It is ready to go, curled up around the windscreenwiper fluid, as I installed it with the rest of the kit. I'm also fairly certain that it is too big to fit through some of the spaces that I have seen suggested on this forum and others,  e.g. around the bonnet release cable on the driver side. To run it along with the many wires coming in behind the dashboard on the passenger side also seem a bit of a tight fit to add another thick cable, and I'm worried to damage those in the process. From what I can tell or find, there is no existing hole in the car for this, as there is on some. Drilling a hole in the bulkhead seems to be a reasonable option here for me.

Does anybody have any experience with this, or can point to the right place to drill a hole in the bulkhead? It is a bit difficult to tell where to place it and avoid hitting something more or less important in the process. I'd love to see a picture of how it can be done.

Thanks!

25mm HOLE!!! :o

Jeez does it power the national grid as well !!!...

Assuming you have a left hand drive car, there is most likely a plate on the passenger side  footwell where the right hand drive pedals would be....thats where I would be looking for something so big!!

 Yeah, it's massive, and a bit ridiculous.

Thanks for the suggestion. It's left hand drive indeed but haven't really been able to find anything around there. Spare some bolts and such that hold some clips on the engine bay side (I think, but hard to tell what's what on the other side).

It's so massive since it's basically an armoured cable with a plug already attached on the end. I suppose a possibility would be to strip and reassemble it after threading through a smaller hole, but I'd prefer to leave it as is.

Hej!

How did you end up solving the problem with the cable to the cabin heater?

I just started to install a kit from Calix, trying to get the cable thru in a already made hole seems hard...

Skoda Fabia MK2 TSI86. :)

Hälsningar,

Peter

Did you manage to do this and have info and pictures to share?
