Leaking clutch slave cylinder ?

Yesterday clutch pedal went straight to floor. I can see fluid on gearbox housing. So I am guessing the internal  slave cylinder is knackered possibbly. 

 

I spoke to a gearbox specialist and they said likely new cylinder and new clutch as it will have been contaminated. They are also saying possible DMF replacement. 

 

I guess its cant just be cleaned, clutch was only replaced 10k miles ago.

 

All in £1100 or £650 if just clutch. Can anyone recommend anywhere in Leicester  to get a second opinion or an indy mechanic I could use to get the costs down ?

 

And this looks good value for the lot ?

My slave cylinder failed at approx 165k miles.

Local garage has replaced it (in April 2015), payed 70 eur for the cylinder and 95 euro for labour.

 

DMF was replaced earlier. Both clutch and SMF (i'd the DMF replaced by a SMF in the past) weren't replaced when the slave cylinder failed.

They didn't mentioning anything about the contamination of the clutch or dmf. Based on my experience with them, they would have told me if so. (They always split their advies between 'what must be done' and 'what they recommend to do')

 

Car is still running fine since (Now at 260k miles and 3,5 years later)

hmmm just spoke to a second garage and they said the clutch would need to be replaced too .. I need a third opinion ! 

If it is any help, we had our master and slave cylinders replaced last year at around 168K and the clutch/flywheel is fine - no contamination.

@Marculos2 - There are 3 possibilities here, depending on gearbox fitted:-

 

  1. External slave - There is no possibility of leaked hydraulic fluid contaminating the clutch.
  2. Internal slave 1 - The box needs dropped, but there is no contamination of the clutch lining.
  3. Internal slave 2 - The box needs dropped, and hydraulic fluid has contaminated the clutch lining. This is the only circumstance in which you need a new friction plate.

Well, my point is that they've gone straight to (3) on no evidence (that you've relayed), which is better for them because they make more from the job and don't have the car sitting in their workshop until the next delivery.

Had another look and fluid is getting to the bleed nipple. I cant see it leaking underneath but tray is in the way. Guessing need to have another look, could it be any other than the slave cylinder ?

@Marculos2 - Putting your first and most recent posts together, I think that either the internal seals on the slave have failed (so you get fluid blowing past them when you put your foot on the pedal), which means you need a new  slave but is absolutely not evidence of an internal fluid leak, supported by you still seeing fluid at the bleed nipple, or possibly the flexible pipe has failed internally and is blowing up when you try to declutch, and that means you don't even need a new slave!

 

You do need a trustworthy garage though, and I'm in no position to recommend one of those in Leicester.

Thanks Ken, trying to find a decent mechanic !

I use Lion Garage in Leicester for all the big repaires on my Octavia 1.9PD 2009 which has done 307400 miles (Used them over 10 years).

I had similar problems last  year with the clutch slave unit gave up.

The Octavia is fitted with a 5 speed gearbox so the clutch slave unit is fitted outside the box but if you have 6 speed gearbox fitted its inside the bell housing (gearbox out).

Wasn't the release bearing changed at the same time as the clutch replacement 10k miles ago(usually in the kit!) - if so under guarantee?

 

If you didn't bother changing the DMF flywheel 10k miles ago - why now?

I only bought the car in November. I only know 10k miles ago a new uprated clutch and new gearbox was fitted so yes you would think they would replaced the release bearing. No idea if a new DMF was fitted.

In that case as above - Local friendly independant to remove gearbox and have a look to see if DMF worn and clutch contaminated. Whichever way the gearbox has to come off.
