Newbie alert - Auto buying advice please

Featured Replies

Hello,

I would be grateful for some pointers that may help me (or disuade me!) in a potential upcoming purchase.

I'm in the market for a reliable auto and have my eye on a 2007 Octavia Ambiente FSI 6 speed automatic, with 83, 000 miles on the clock (on for £3,000).

It looks in decent condition from the ad and has full service history at the required intervals according to the dealer but before I go and have a look, are there any biggies I should be aware of in terms of known issues or significant upcoming service expenses?

I've found a helpful post on this forum stating DSG service schedule at 37,000 intervals so hopefully that's been done but if it hasn't, is oil replacement for this box a costly operation?

That post also notes the cambelt is a chain with no stated replacement schedule, I don't know much about these things but is that something to be wary of on a car of this age and potentially expensive?

Many thanks in advance

DSG Oil change is £179 at Skoda Dealer. Indie garages are sometimes even more expensive due to the cost of the oil alone.

That's not a deal breaker then at least, thanks for that.

I don't know that drivetrain but I have a feeling it would be a normal 6sp auto rather than DSG.  Never the less it may need fluid changing.  FSI was 1.4 or 1.6 wasn't it?  I can't really help with the engine specifics but the platform will be the same as all the other mk2s so the features and weaknesses in those threads all equally as relevant.  Heaps of threads on it.  A good inspection and drive.  Looking under the car thoroughly. Feel carpet.  Diagnostics read etc etc...
