Does this seem about right?

Hey all,

So, mate has his MY19 Polo GTI delivered last week and then, Wednesday managed to over cook a corner and cause a bit of damage...

After laughing at him for about 5 minutes (he drove a 15+ year old 1.25 Fiesta before that) he then told me he had already taken it to the dealers to get fixed... :o

I'm feeling he's getting spanked by the dealer just a little, especially after they quoted £900 for a new wheel, which he has been able to source else where new for £130 delivered.

Quoted £1400 to supply/fit the parts "needing" replaced and to put a new tyre on the replacement wheel he's providing.

I've told him to ask to see the parts removed, even just to show him how much damage he really has caused, but hopefully to prompt the dealership to be a little more honest about what actually needs replacing and what doesn't.

Thoughts?

Well.... I just replaced my OSF track rod end, OEM, for £8. Since other stuff was already removed, it took but a moment. Brand spanking new, my hub would have cost £90.

I also got my alignment done (it was badly out) at KwikFit, who quoted a maximum of £74.99 before they even saw the car and only charged me £40 in the end.

Granted, my car ain't a spanky new Polo, but still...

I expect he's getting 'kidney dialysis' included in the service... !! :D

My concerns too. Poor lad knows he's screwed up, but he's being a pleb and not listening to reason around these things.

At least, if he asks to see the parts removed, he'll hopefully be able to challenge anything iffy.

I take it he made the decision not to make an insurance claim for his damaged in this accident / incident.

High Insurance, high excess, future higher premiums type thing...

Whilst that was taken into consideration, he panicked as it's a week old and on PCH, but he'd have saved a fortune shopping around.

He was going to let them charge him £900 for a new VW Parker wheel, when he could get it for £130 delivered.

What really makes this worse, is his family works in the industry and to avoid the embarrassment, he's went to a dealer miles from home.

He knows he's a muppet, but it's hard to watch him waste money he doesn't have.

Expensive lesson learnt but nobody injured.

First mistake " he had already taken it to the dealers to get fixed. ".

He'll still have to declare the accident tho, and for the next 3 to 5 years, or risk having his insurance voided should any claims need to be made later on...

It may or may not make a difference to his premium...only way to find out is to compare firstly without declaring the accident, and then declare and compare.

You do have to declare a Theft or an Accident.  Policy holders should read their Policy.

How many declare hitting a pot hole or a kerb in winter and damaging a car that they do not make an insurance claim on or a claim to the Local Authorities?

No other vehicle involved, people or animals and no 3rd party damage!

That does not mean you should not obviously.

For such a sporty hot hatch surprised to see it fitted with Michelin Primacy 3 tyres from the factory. We have those on the wife's Karoq and although they give good mpg and are quiet I wouldn't fit them on my Octavia. Although he may have been pushing the car too hard can't help but wonder whether better tyres would have avoided his mishap in the first place, as it's the most critical component on any car apart from the nut behind the steering wheel.

Michelin Primacy 3 or HP's are the type of rubbish that were on the Toyota GT86 / Subaru BRZ, summer tyres that motoring journalists big upped for getting the back end out when you were a 'real driver'.

Not so good when the front end fails to get traction or the driver to get around a bend..
