Scout wheel arch plastic trim

Featured Replies

Hi, looking for some recommendations on the best adhesive to use to stick down a couple of areas of the black wheel arch trim. Most annoying bit is the rear-most corner where it meets the rear bumper. It has a tendancy to stick out a bit.

So far I have tried... 3M very sticky self adhesive pad (no success), hot glue gun (no success) and finally Tiger Seal PU adhesive. Tiger seal lasted a couple of months before the bond gave up. In every case I have prepped the surfaces with acetone.

Any recommendations, both on products and method of application.

Thanks in advance.

Skoda supply a dedicated adhesive for the job. Contact a dealer with their own body shop as they'll be likely to know the part number for you.

If it's the same stuff used for holding body panels on it's a high-modulus PU adhesive/sealant. VAG version is about 30 squid a tube, or you can but the same stuff from Toolstation (Puraflex 40 High Modulus PU Sealant & Adhesive 300ml) delivered for just over a fiver.  Application with a mastic gun; sticks like the veritable brown stuff to a blanket.

That would have been my choice as well, i used to stick Sierra wings on with it, but he said that Tiger seal PU did not work, must be a surface preparation problem.

In my bathrooms I have problems with silicones and even PU sealers not sticking to some acrylic baths and shower trays, some UPVC wall cladding and very often the UPVC window fitters trims that I use to bridge the gaps, goes on fine, seems stuck like **** to a blanket but comes away leaving an invisible capillary gap which causes massive water ingress problems.

It doesnt happen everywhere, it can be on half the length of the bead and not the other, again it must be a surface prep problem, wish I could get to the bottom of it.

Guys, thanks for the feedback. I think you may be right regarding the (poor) surface preparation. I wiped down the two surfaces to be joined with acetone but gaining access to the plastic was challenging. As it was only about 40mm of the triangular tip of the wheel arch trim which was sticking out and needing stuck down. I will try again with the Toolstation PU adhesive. Any tips/recommendations on surface prep much appreciated.

Thanks John

If Tigerseal didn't work then I would try Sikaflex.  Make sure it clean, dry and at room temperature.  I generally wipe everything down with tar and glue remover to make sure there are no oils left.  Thats what I did when fitting the 90 spec arch  trims to my old Mk2 Golf.
