DMF starting to fail?

Featured Replies

So when investigating an odd sound from the aux belt, I noticed that from under the car you can hear a weird rattle noise, like something is moving around almost. Can't hear anything from inside the car as far as I can tell, with the door open, sat in the driver's seat it can be heard if it is quiet outside. Seems to only be in neutral or park, however it may be that the slight vibration when in park or reverse masks the noise. I'll attach a sound clip, it is hard to make out, but right at the start seems to show the noise the best.

The car drives fine as far as I'm aware, I've done 10k miles in it in the last 6 months and haven't noticed any change at all. Car is just under 100k miles. Could this be the DMF failing, or is the PD engine just a bit rattly? The sound seems to be coming from behind the engine, when looking at it from the front.

Sounds like a normal Scout PD to me, but I'm not mechanically minded.

When my DMF was failing I could only hear it when I depressed the clutch. The sound it made was like swirling pieces of metal around a metal bucket.

Weirdly the sound this guys DMF makes when he releases the clutch (10 secs) is similar to what mine sounded like when I depressed it.

That does sound different to mine... However, can you hear the metallicy rattle a second or two into the sound clip I put on? Sounds a bit like a tumble drier

That was just how mine sounded before it failed at 93K.

The recording I uploaded is like yours?

It is due a cambelt and water pump as well... ouch!

Also, I paid £2500 for the car in July, it had a new turbo straight away when I got it. So if I replace the DMF (assuming it is time) and the cambelt + water pump + aux belt, is it sensible to assume the car should be set for a good while? It had a DSG oil change in July and I'll give it another oil service when the work is done because I've done 9k miles on the current oil.

Decided to hold off on the DMF until it becomes more obvious.

However, I do have another issue (identical to the issue my Kia Sorento also has) a strange creaking noise from the alternator area. I'll attach a sound clip, it does this on and off at idle. Also makes a similar noise when steering, but that's probably different!

An update on this. The latest sound clip i put on here has now been solved. The alternator clutch pulley was replaced and I am told the noise has now gone completely. Total cost of £99. I'm yet to pick up the car, but i'll update later whether or not it is fixed!

I can confirm the noise has now 100% gone. Very pleased! If you have similar symptoms, i'd suggest getting it changed!
