The fan on my Fabia 1.4 only kicks in on the 3rd notch around on the dial - the first 2 are dead. Is the switch mechanism behind the dial or is the problem more likely in a variable resistor type thing, and if so where would that be?

It will be the resistor in the top of the heater box, its behind the glove box.
