DIY Wheel Refurb?

Featured Replies

I'm looking for (yet more) advice so thanks in advance. Next month I will be doing my twice-yearly deep-clean of the car. It's a daily driver, covering more than 20k miles a year and I can't afford to have it off the road. Did a search on here and the wheel zone, but didn't turn up anything so thought I would ask the experts on here.

All four wheels are kerbed / marked. Example below.

Full wheel shot for context. The wheels are 18" anthracite Pegasus on a Mk 3 Superb. In each case it is only the rim which is scuffed. There is scoring, so I'm guessing they will need filling and sanding, then re-finishing.

So here are the questions. First and foremost, is this something that can be done as a DIY job, or is it one for the professionals? I have a couple of constraints - it would need to be done with the wheel and tyre on the car. And it would have to be done by hand (no machine tools).

If it is possible to DIY, does anyone have any recommendations both for technique and products? I've watched quite a few on-line videos, but interested to hear from anyone on here who has tried this and how you got on.

Nice wheels. The only comment i can add is, when i've had my wheels refurb'd , the company that did them, loaned me some wheels while mine were being done.

I wouldn't bother doing it yourself if you want a decent finish. You might be able clean up the diamond cut. As all 4 wheels require work, the cheapest and probably overall cheapest option would be to have a complete refurb.
