Appropriate prayers for scout 1.8 tsi

Featured Replies

I believe my scout is now destined for the grave. Seems the vag tsi malaise has finally called its number.

Yesterday when picking up kids from school I had difficulty starting the car but dismissed it as low battery what with audio on, ac while waiting. Eventually after second cranking for maybe 15 seconds started and we drove home. Later in the evening i went out and when i attempted to start the car it was a repeat of the incidence earlier on. Once when driving it was certainly low on power and engines was misfiring. I pulled over to the side of road and 3 times tried too start the car but it will not fire up. Called for breakdown and the guy plugged it in and recovered these codes P0303 cylinder 3 misfire detected,P03011 cylinder 1 misfire detected, P0300 random/multiple cylinder detected, P0016 crankshaft position - camshaft position correllation bank 1sensor A and P2015 intake manifold position sensor/ switch circuit range/perfomance bank 1a. All the codes come back even after being cleared.

Seems the car has an oil leak because there appears to be quite a bit of oil underneath the car from where it was standing for 3 hours. and oil level was well below minimum on the dipstick.

My garage is closed for the weekend but will see(confirm) diagnosis on Monday.

Just seems to me that at 125K cost of repair will far exceed value of the car.

Updates on Monday

Engine is shot. No compression with rods, pistons, etc, bent, broken or in the wind place. Mechanic thinks leaking oil and inherent design issues caused timing chain to slip and cause mayhem in the engine.

Next step - 3.5k to rebuild engine but given the car is on 125k scrap is the sensible solution.

Time to start searching for a new wagon. Certainly not from vag stable most likely from the far East.

Is this the same issue that seems to plague all 1.8 TSI'S?

Could you not find a second hand engine for less than £3.5K?

Oh eBay it seems you can get an engine for 1.5k but I imagine with ancillaries and labor involved is what's adding up to 3.5k.

It sounds like the timing chain tensioner stopped working.  There's probably a slightly worn cam chain as well.  Timing goes wrong and valves hit pistons.... CRUNCH!
