Engine swap

Featured Replies

Hey Guys.

I've been wondering for a while but cant find any Info so I was wondering if you guys could shed some light for me.

I am thinking of swapping the engine in my mk2 pfl. (Just because I want something different)

I have been looking at the Audi 3.0 tdi or even the 3.5tdi

Can anyone tell me, is this possible and if so, some idea on how to do it.

Thanks guys.

Lee

It won't be easy either way, as well as very expensive. You'll likely struggle to fit either in, to be honest. First of all, you'll need all of the following:

  • The engine (duh)
  • Exhaust fabricated
  • Engine mounts (likely will need to be fabricated too)
  • ECU from the replacement engine
  • Wiring will likely need to be chopped up and re=done
  • Drive axles - you'll have to find a drive axle that will fit the gearbox side of the 3.0/3.5, but also the wheel side. There's likely an existing part that would get you close.
  • Fuel system will need to be upgraded as well, going from fuel pump onwards, new lines all around to handle Common Rail pressure
  • A/C and power steering will need to be modified
  • Much much more

There's a lot of minor details besides that list, but an engine swap from a car that was never meant to accommodate such an engine, but it can be done. The thing to keep in mind is that it will never be as faultless as the existing set-up. Expect a large number of error codes and things not working properly.

Expect to spend a huge amount of money and time to do this project, it won't be easy but it would turn out bloody cool!

As I mentioned above, I'm not too sure whether the engine will fit in there, maybe somebody else has info on that.

If you're wanting something with a bit more oompf, but a lot easier, consider a 2.5 Tdi 5 cylinder swap from a transporter and the like. It's a lot more common than the V6 swaps.

All the best!

EDIT: I just saw that you have a 2.0tdi, not the 1.9. If it's the CR version of the 2.0 you'll find it a lot easier to set up fuelling on the V6 set-up.

Nice one buddy. Hadn't considered the 2.5 but seems logical.

Thanks pal.
