I have to smile......the smooth roads are reserved for the furthest flung outposts of the EU, paved with UK funds......here at home we have what could be the worst in Europe.

Speak for your own county, the roads where I come from are pretty good. 😋

To add to the prime topic, I picked up my new Karoq Scout on Saturday and have been driving it around North Wales on holiday since and can't fault the wheels and suspension at all. Even in its not run in state, the car has been very comfortable.

Pleased you are enjoying the Scout. A worthy addition to your Skoda "collection"? 😊

Hi,

The conversations on this topic have been very helpful to me as I await delivery of Karoq SEL.

Defo not a fan of low profile tyres but did take a demonstrator SEL out for a test drive fitted with the 19" wheels.

Have to say that the ride on poor roads was better than in my Ford Puma and I didn't think to myself that I would need to change the wheels for smaller ones at the end of the test.

Had 2 Yetis before this, I think the ride and noise was more subdued in the Karoq than the Yetis (IMOP)

Some good and salient points discussed here though!

The ride on 19” wheels on my Karoq edition is much better than a Yeti on 17” and possibly equal or better than a Yeti on 16”. (I have had 3 yetis on a mixture of each, first on 17”, second on 16” and the last having both 17” summer and 16” winter wheels)

Be careful though as some sport versions have even lower profile tyres on their 19” wheels and with the speedo gearing set to suit the smaller diameter, I have read elsewhere that you are stuck with this and a very harsh ride

I changed from Yeti on 17's to Karoq on 19's. No choice, its what the car came with. The ride, IMHO, is a little better in the Karoq. Yes it thumps over rough roads, but not to excess. The car overall is a lot quieter than the Yeti. Just beware of curbs, their is no protection for the rims.

225/60R16 are in a different league comfort wise to the 225/45R19 size. Not surprising really as the 225/60 size has sidewalls 33% higher than the 225/45 size. The load index at 44psi is also much higher on the 225/60R16 tyres, so you could potentially drop your tyre pressures by a massive 6psi compared to the 225/45R19 size. The price of the tyres is around £80 for the 16" tyres and more than double this for the 19" tyres. I'm not so keen on Skoda's choice of rim size for the 225/60R16 tyres...they have chosen a rather narrow 6J rim. The Yeti and Superb MK2 had a 7Jx16 ET45 rim as one option. Here's one:

As someone has already pointed out, the Karoq's 19" rims are a rather wide 8J, which stretches the sidewalls on the 225/45R19 tyres leaving them very exposed to kerbing damage. Stretching the sidewalls like this also makes the ride harder. The Octavia MK3 in contrast often uses much narrower 7J rims for their 225/45 tyres (albeit only 17" diameter).

I bought a set of 16” winter wheels for my Yeti but now know they should have been on 7j rims et45. I was sold 6j et43 but they did fit perfectly . I now find these are exactly correct to use on my Karoq, so will be fitting them soon. Be interesting to see the change in the ride compared to the 19” rims. I now know I was using non type approved wheels on Yeti so may have had insurance issues after an accident.

Conversely, they are exactly correct for a Karoq, and you may have issues with 7j wheels not type approved for your car.

Fitted my winter tyres today. As above bought for my previous Yeti but turns out they were narrower at 6j than specified for a Yeti but actually spot on for my new Karoq.

The ride is even better with 16” wheels on now, even though acceptable on the 19” ones.

Only issue is that the speedo is even less accurate at 10% out now ie @ 55 on speedo Car is exactly at 50mph

The 64 dollar question will be: will you go back to the 19" wheels after the winter??

Yes, of course, the ride on the 225/45 tyres is fine, and much better than previous Yeti on standard 17" wheels, probably equivalent to Yeti on 16" which I had on my 2nd Greenline Yeti or winter tyres on third Yeti.

Yes, I agree with you.

I’ve had my Karoq Sportline for a month now on the standard Vega 19”s with Bridgestone Turanza 225/40/19 and I’m very disappointed in the ride.

I fell for the Sportline looks and should have taken more notice about the ride quality on 19’s in the reviews!

It shudders over every road imperfection and as you know in the UK there’s a lot. It’s doing my head in, I’m going to need to do something about it. Help.

A few months ago I fitted 8J x 19" Superb Vega alloys onto my wife's SEL Karoq and hoped with the Bridgestone S001 performance tyres in 235/40R19 size the good ride on its 18" Braga alloys wouldn't be ruined and I'm pleased to report the ride is still good so perhaps try a tyre with more profile depth.

225/40R19 on 8J rims is about as bad as it gets. Not only have you got very little sidewall, but the little sidewall that you have got is being stretched by those relatively wide 8J rims.

As someone has already pointed out, 235/40R19 would not only give you a little more sidewall height but the 8J rims won't stretch the sidewalls as much...so it's a win win. However, it really depends how much improvement you want.

Compared to 235/40R19 on 8J rims, 235/55R17 on 7J rims would be in a different comfort league altogether. Another benefit to comfort is that not only are 7Jx17 rims a lot cheaper than 8Jx19 rims, but 235/55R17 tyres are a lot cheaper than 235/40R19 tyres.

@Carlston Are you speaking about levels of comfort from being in the cars with the different size tyres and wheels or purely on what you think the difference in comfort with no experience of the actual difference.

ie going by the scores on the doors,

ie going by the scores on the doors,

235/55R17 isn't a standard Karoq size, so the scores won't be on the doors.

225/45R19 is a standard Karoq size and the outside diameter of the 235/55R17 tyre is less than 0.8% bigger so you will hardly notice any difference to the gearing or speedometer reading.

The load index of a 235/55R17 tyre @ 3 Bar (44psi) is 99 (775kg).

The load index of a 235/55R19 tyre @ 3 Bar (44psi) is 92 (630kg).

If you divide 775 by 630 you get 1.23... which means that the 235/55R17 tyre can support 23% more weight than the 235/40R19 tyre at the same tyre air pressure. This is a huge difference. It also means that the 235/40R19 tyre needs 23% more tyre air pressure to support the same weight as a 235/55R17 tyre. Or to put it another way, the 235/55R17 tyre only needs to be pumped up to just over 80% of the tyre pressure that the 235/40R19 tyre needs. For example, if the 235/40R19 tyre needs to be pumped up to 2.4 Bar (35psi), you would only need to pump the 235/55R17 tyre up to 2.0 Bar (29psi). This results in the 235/55R17 tyre having a much longer contact patch with the road than the 235/40R19 tyre which results in the much softer ride...and not forgetting that the 235/55R17 tyre when fitted to a 7J rim will flex much more easily than the 235/40R19 tyre fitted to an 8J rim.

Just for reference the 8J x 19" wheel and 235/40R19 tyres on my wife's Karoq which weighs 1,303kg were fitted to my 2019 Superb 272 Sportline Plus which I weighed precisely on accurate weighbridge at 1,660kg so they are supporting around 357kg less overall weight and dealing with only 150PS and 250NM whereas the stage 1 Superb was pushing out 363PS and 514NM. :)

Hopefully, the Skoda Superb MK4 will start using the bigger Kodiaq sized wheels rather than the smaller Karoq sized wheels. 235/55R18 would look great on the Superb MK4.

@Carlston you ability to find tyre and wheel sizes and retailers is very impressive.  But always making out that tyres that are less low profile and wheels that are smaller Is the way to go and will mean a better or less harsh ride is just guff sometimes, then when you just keep saying that unless you are trying the cars on actual roads it does seem that you are a small wheel evangelist.

My 2.0 TSI Sportline came with 8J x 19" Vega wheels & 225/45 R19 Bridgestone Dueler H/P tyres. Now these are different tyres to those quoted above, with a slightly deeper section, and I also have the DCC option. So I'm not sure which factor is the most important, but I'm finding the ride on my local roads slightly better than my old Golf SV with its 16 inch wheels.

That’s interesting as I test drove a 2.0 Sportline and I don’t recall the ride as being quite so jarring. I imagine that the DCC must make make by far the most difference though. Interesting in all my searching I never saw that as an option on an available car. Very rare!
