Octavia mk2 squealing noise after replacing turbo cartridge

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've spent a lot of time replacing the turbo cartridge in my octavia, and after turning it on for the first time I'm greeted with this horrible squealing noise which tells me not to drive it..

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJm4uv9YkuQ&feature=youtu.be

Initially I thought it was a loose V clamp between turbo and exhaust, but now that's nice and tight the noise is still there. So, missing bolt somewhere? Rubbished gasket somewhere? I really am not sure what is causing this.. Anyone have any ideas, or heard this noise before?

My hunch is that this is due to a bad EGR cooler gasket as it got a lot of abuse during the removal and installation of the turbo. I've ordered both a replacement gasket and some blanking plates, as the blanking plate directly on the manifold egr port is both easier and should also discount other leaks in the EGR system...

Sounds to me like its vacuum trying to get in/escape opposed to mechanical friction. I doubt it is the actual turbo cartridge, as it would not make that sound if it was rubbing on the housing. Any codes come up in the ECU? Keep an eye out for vacuum codes and the like.

EDIT: just saw you ordered blanking plates - while you're taking out the EGR cooler and the rest of the system have a look see if any seals or hoses seem perished and get a friend to listen around the engine bay while you turn it on. Bonus points if your friend has a Subaru, use his vape to check leaks in the vacuum hoses ;)

When you say vacuum I suppose you mean an air leak rather than a vacuum actuator hose/system issue? That's comforting. Worst case scenario the turbo is eating itself again! Good idea with the codes, hopefully there's an EGR fault

I'll update (famous last words) when I have some daylight.

Yes sorry, I do mean an air leak. My train of thought is that if it was friction from the turbo spooling up it would get louder as the turbo reaches idle speed, but in the video, it seems more like the noise is at a constant volume. Definitely have a look in the computer, if there's anything wrong with the EGR system it will be sure to tell you. The mk2s love to throw codes (probably just mine :dull:).

All the best!

Thanks!

I slid in the blanking plate between the exhaust manifold and the EGR pipe and the noise vanished. Hurrah!

It survived a 10 mile round trip to Asda. There's a boost leak by the feel of things because it has more power than no turbo, but less power than before. I remember the boost hose from turbo->intercooler being loose on the turbo. Almost like the garage gave it back to me missing something to make it fit properly (they took off the pipes and found the initial turbo issue before I started working on it). It has the metal clip but still rattles. I'll probably duct tape it to see if that gets me to full boost, and then try figure out what exactly is missing there.

Glad to hear it! Enjoy the car, hopefully with full boost now. :)
