Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo 2013 1.2TSI Timing Chain Rattle

Featured Replies

I serviced my skoda fabia monte carlo 2013 the other night and when it came to running the engine again there was an awful rattle from start up . Have seen some people having troubles with these engines relating to timing chains and was wondering if anyone has had any expierance with this sort espiacally,  I've ordered a full timing chain kit and was wondering if anyone had any advice before I attempted the change, will I need any special tools or is there anything I should be aware of, if anyone had any links to a video or a guide at all it would be great, thanks already!

Unusual to have a sudden problem like you describe especially on a 13 plate which has the latest timing kit fitted.

Before you change anything.....

When you changed the oil filter, did you make sure the large rubber seal that sits in the bottom of the filter came out with the filter? Very often it gets left behind and it can be missed because its under the black oil in the housing, so you have to fish it out.

If you left it in, you have 2 sealing rings and the oil filter is not fully fitted and you will have very low oil pressure and flow. Could be the cause of the constant rattle

Also seen that I looked on the filer housing and it all seems to be sat flush, would it be noticable without removing the filter? In all honesty I didn't even look at the old filter, how big is the rubber seal and would it be noticable after installation

No, its not noticeable, you need to remove the filter to check. Look at the pictures here....

I will have a look tomorrow at the filter parts wont arrive till Monday for the chain so plenty of time you check,, will let you know the outcome! Thank you so much for the help I really appreciate it!

Are you sure you didn't inadvertently turn the engine back a bit while doing the service, such as by leaving in gear and brake not fully applied? If the engine is turned backward it pushes the tensioner back and the chain goes loose. Sounds terrible on start until oil pressure pushes the tensioner out. I recommend immediately turning the engine off in a loud rattle situation as often this can be the time when the chain rides up on the sprockets and can jump. Restart and it should be quiet again.

Changing the timing chain is a big job to DIY. You have to drain the coolant, undo hoses, detach and lower the exhaust, drain the oil, remove the sump, aux belt, crank pulley and timing covers. Not sure but probably need to support the engine and remove left engine mount to be able to remove timing cover. Lock the crank and cam with the right tools. Then you need to remove and replace top and bottom sprockets, you will need special tools for this. The sump and timing covers are sealed with liquid gasket, the official stuff is expensive and you have to meticulously clean the old stuff off and apply as per workshop instructions. Finally reconnect exhaust with maybe new gasket/bolts, water hoses, refill coolant and bleed. Timing is critical and needs to be adapted using a full capable diagnostic tool like vcds or official Skoda equipment. Download official workshop instructions from Erwin and read before attempting.

Thanks for the advice, I know they seem a big job but they don't look bad to do once your cracked on, the tools to get the sprocket off are they special tools or will I be able to find something in the workshop to remove them, I'm guessing it is some sort of puller? The car was on a 2 post ramp when serviced in Neutral so I wouldn't of thought the engine got turned back!
